Blue boats scatter gold trap frames across the grid and those frames stay put, spin after spin, until a crab finally drops into one. The catch is brutal: a colossal crab worth up to 1000x only pays that value if every square it covers was already trapped. Otherwise it shatters into small change.

Crab Trap Slot Overview

Crab Trap is a fishing slot about patience. Gold traps pile up on the grid spin after spin, and the money only arrives when a crab finally drops into one.

NetEnt built it on scatter pays across a 6x4 grid, so wins land by count rather than on lines. No wilds. No cascades, no tumbles, one evaluation and the reels stop. And the symbol wins are pocket change: the whole table tops out at 10x the bet regardless of which symbol shows up. The crabs carry the money, and every other part of the design exists to get one of them into a trap.

What separates it from the dozen other seaside hold-and-win games is that the traps do not reset between spins. A blue boat drops a frame and that frame stays, through winning spins and losing ones alike, until something lands in it. Over a long session the board slowly turns into a record of everything already banked.

Theme & Design

The reels sit inside a fisherman's shack on a wooden jetty, framed by driftwood posts under a red pantile roof strung with warm bulbs and hurricane lanterns. A red-and-white striped lighthouse stands on the headland to the left, palms and a big dark fish hanging from a rope to the right, a landing net propped in a terracotta pot. In the main game the sky is flat midday blue. Free spins swing it to pink and violet dusk. Small thing, but it lands.

Symbols are seaside props on pale canvas: a green glass float, a blue wellington boot, a tin bucket, a red starfish, and carved wooden J, Q, K and A. The crab is a cartoon red thing that holds up a little plank with its cash value painted across it, which is smart design, because the prize is readable at a glance without a hover or a menu. Trap frames are heavy gold squares over blue water and they dominate the board, exactly as they should. Cheerful, clean fishing art with an upbeat loop behind it, though the four card ranks eat so much of the grid that the seaside props barely get a look in.

Features & How They Work

Scatter Pays, Three Different Thresholds

Wins pay by symbol count anywhere on the grid, and the minimum count shifts with the tier. Float and boot pay from five. Starfish and bucket need six. The card ranks need seven. Simultaneous wins from different symbols are added together, only the highest win per scattered combination pays, and nothing tumbles afterwards. That is where the 31% hit frequency comes from, and also why so many of those hits are worth less than the spin that produced them.

Blue Boats and the Trap Frames

A Blue Boat lands anywhere, in the main game and in free spins alike. It drops a gold Trap frame on its own position plus 1 to 5 more on random positions that do not already have one. Those frames persist across spins, which makes them the game's memory.

They are also tied to the stake. Change the bet and every frame vanishes, banked against the old bet; change it back and they return exactly as they were. Worth knowing before you nudge the bet mid-session and wonder where the board went.

Red Boat Re-Spins

The Red Boat appears on reel 4 in the main game, but only when five or more Trap frames are already down. Plenty of write-ups skip that condition and claim it always triggers, which is only true in free spins, where it moves to reel 3 and fires every single time. A Blue Boat that fills every remaining position with frames also awards a Re-Spin, and when both boats land together the Blue one adds its frames first.

Once Re-Spins start, normal scatter pays switch off completely. Only crab values pay. Any crab landing on a trapped position locks in place and buys another Re-Spin, and the round ends the moment a Re-Spin adds no new trapped crab. Then comes the accounting: frames that caught a crab are spent and disappear, frames that caught nothing stay put for later. A flat round still leaves the board better than it found it.

The Colossal Break-Up Rule

This is the rule the whole game is built around. Crabs arrive as singles worth 1x to 10x, as 2x2 colossals worth 10x to 100x, or as 3x3 colossals worth 100x to 1000x. At the end of Re-Spins, before a single win is evaluated, any colossal occupying even one untrapped position shatters into 4 or 9 single crabs, each with a random value of 1x to 10x. Colossals only partly in view break into 2, 3 or 6 singles.

So a 1000x crab pays 1000x only when all nine of its squares were trapped before it got there. Anything less and a headline prize collapses into loose change. Harsh, and it is also the only reason the slow work of building frames means anything.

Free Spins

Three, four, five or six-plus lifebuoy scatters award 5, 7, 10 or 15 free spins. Scatters landing inside the feature feed a meter rather than retriggering, with every three collected adding one extra spin. The frames sitting on the board when the feature triggered carry straight in.

Inside free spins those frames are permanent. Re-Spins fire, crabs pay out, and the frames still do not clear until the mode ends. Pair that with the Red Boat triggering unconditionally and the bonus is a properly different game rather than the base game with a counter on it. When it finishes every frame is wiped and the main game restarts with 4 fresh ones.

Buy Feature

50x the bet buys 6 free spins immediately. Accumulated main-game frames are not thrown away: they get saved aside, swapped for 10 new ones for the duration, then handed back when the feature ends. Six spins is an odd number to land on, sitting between the 5 that three scatters give and the 7 from four. And the buy runs at 96.05% RTP against a 96.07% base, so paying for entry costs a fraction rather than buying an edge.

How Crab Trap Plays

The session rhythm is unusually flat for a modern slot. Something pays roughly a third of the time and nearly all of it is small, so a balance drifts down in inches instead of falling off a cliff. Little dead air, and little drama either.

The interest sits in the board rather than the spin. Watching the frame count creep from two to four to five changes how the next spin reads, because at five the Red Boat goes live, and that is a threshold worth tracking. It rewards staying at one stake for a long stretch, which is a strange thing for a slot to reward.

And then the disappointment, which Crab Trap does better than most games manage. Picture a 3x3 crab dropping across half the board with 500 painted under it and three of its nine squares bare. It shatters. The board fills with tiny crabs and the round pays out in small change instead. That sting is the game, and it will probably put some players off entirely, because the version of Crab Trap where everything goes right needs groundwork that most sessions never finish laying.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Trap frames persist across spins, so unpaid spins still build toward the next feature
  • 31% hit frequency and a forgiving flat paytable stretch a small bankroll a long way
  • Free spins keep the frames permanent, so the bonus is a different mode and not just a longer base game
  • The ceiling is legible: one fully trapped 3x3 colossal is basically the max win

Cons

  • Symbol wins cap at 10x the bet, so the base game pays almost nothing on its own
  • No wild, no multiplier, no cascades - the reels are inert between boat landings
  • The 50x buy returns a lower RTP (96.05%) than simply spinning
  • 1,191x is a modest ceiling and rules the game out for high-stakes play

Is Crab Trap Worth Playing?

6/10

Crab Trap does one idea properly. Persistent Trap frames turn a low-stakes scatter-pays game into something carrying a running state between spins, and the colossal break-up rule makes that state matter instead of sitting there as decoration. That is more design thought than most fishing slots get.

The ceiling is at least honest about itself. 1,191x is barely more than the 1000x a single perfect 3x3 crab pays, so there is no mystery about where a big win has to come from and no fantasy about stacking multipliers to reach it. Whether that reads as elegant or as a hard limit depends on what you came for.

Against it: the base game is thin. Eight symbols paying a maximum of 10x, no wild, nothing to do between boats but feed frames onto a board with no payoff in sight. Three years on it holds up as a small, clever game that never quite gets loud.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum win in Crab Trap?

1,191x the bet. Nearly all of it comes from one place: a 3x3 colossal crab carrying its top value of 1000x, landing with all nine of its positions already covered by Trap frames.

How do you trigger free spins in Crab Trap?

Land 3, 4, 5 or 6+ lifebuoy scatters anywhere in the main game for 5, 7, 10 or 15 free spins. Every 3 scatters collected during the feature add 1 extra spin. There is also a Buy Feature at 50x the bet for 6 spins.

Does Crab Trap have a wild symbol?

No. There is no wild and no cascade mechanic. Wins come from scatter pays by symbol count, plus the cash values printed on crabs that land in Trap frames.

What are the RTP and volatility of Crab Trap?

96.07% RTP with medium-low volatility and a 31% hit frequency. The Buy Feature runs slightly below base at 96.05%. Some operators run a 94.06% build instead, so check the in-game info panel before playing.

Can Crab Trap be played for free, and is there an age limit?

The demo runs on play money with no registration or deposit needed. Real-money play is restricted to players 18+ or the legal age where you live, and it should be treated as entertainment rather than a way to earn.
