Lately, Betsoft has mostly put out line and ways games capped at a 10,000x max win. With Birds in the City, they are going straight after the formula Pragmatic Play made famous.

They've basically taken the Gates of Olympus or Starlight Princess formula, a 6x5 grid where symbols pay anywhere, and slapped a massive 45,000x max win on the loading screen to get our attention. But before you go chasing that number, you need to know how this game actually works, because it is unforgiving.

If you were playing slots back in 2016, you might remember a game just called Birds!. This isn't really a sequel, it just reuses the theme. You've got a bunch of goofy birds (some in lab coats, some looking grumpy) and brightly colored eggs dropping onto city power lines. It's bright, loud, and chaotic, but honestly, the cute cartoon birds are just a distraction from the hardcore math running under the hood.

• The Basics: You need 8 matching symbols anywhere on the screen to win. When you do, they pop, new symbols drop in, and the chain keeps going until you stop winning. The RTP is an average 96%.

During free spins, your multipliers are collected in a "fuse box" meter that doesn't reset. Sounds great, right? Wrong. The rules are brutal:

1. The meter only goes up if a nest lands on a winning spin.
2. Your total collected multiplier only applies to a win if a new nest lands on that exact spin.

If you win without a new nest dropping, you just get the flat, tiny payout, even if your meter is sitting at 100x.

You can pay 1.5x your bet to double your chances of naturally spinning into the bonus, or you can just buy it.

The standard 100x buy is okay. Mine came back at 42.6x, less than half its price, but it's fun when the meter actually does its job and links up a few winning cascades.

But stay away from the 500x "Super" Bonus Buy. It guarantees that every nest that drops is at least a 10x multiplier. Sounds amazing until reality hits. Because of those rules I mentioned above, I sat there watching an x50 and then an x100 drop on dead spins and vanish into thin air, while the fuse box meter sat at x30 and could not touch either of them. Watching big multipliers disappear because a spin didn't win is an incredibly punishing way to play.

Birds in the City is a highly polished game, but its rules throw value away at an alarming rate. If you want a fun tumble game, there are better ones out there. Play this one with caution, and don't fall for the 500x bonus buy trap.
