Pragmatic Play and Reel Kingdom teamed up again in August 2026 to bring us Golden Retriever. If you've played Big Bass Bonanza, you'll feel right at home in this sunny meadow setting. It uses the exact same money-collect mechanic, but with a twist: they've bolted a coin-respin game onto it. The problem is that you don't get to choose which bonus you play: it's entirely up to chance.

Golden Retriever base game on a 5x3 board in a sunny meadow, five dog bowl Money symbols on the reels and three of them paying line 6
Outside the free spins those bowls are just a line symbol. The cash printed on them goes nowhere, because there's no wild to collect it.

The Random Bonus Draw

Landing three or more scatters triggers the bonus, but here's where it gets a bit controversial. A random draw decides whether you get the traditional free spins or the Hold & Spin coin game. The number of scatters dictates your starting point: three gives you 10 free spins or a 1x multiplier for the coins, while five bumps you up to 20 spins or a 10x multiplier.

If you're impatient, there are two bonus buys, but they still don't let you bypass the random draw. The standard 120x bet option guarantees 3 to 5 scatters. The premium 500x option guarantees 4 or 5 scatters (removing the lowest tier), but you're still at the mercy of the random selector. Paying 500x your bet and not getting to pick your bonus feels like a steep, somewhat frustrating gamble. Alternatively, you can use the Ante Bet to double your stake for extra scatters on the reels, though this disables the buy features entirely.

This is the moment you don't control. Five scatters earned the top tier, and the ball still decides whether it becomes 20 free spins or the coin board.

Free Spins And The Retrigger Ladder

If you draw the free spins, it plays out much like Big Bass. A Golden Retriever wild collects the cash values attached to dog bowls, which can go up to 500x. Of course, the usual frustration applies when you see huge bowls land without a wild to collect them. However, if a wild lands alone, a random modifier can drop bowls onto the screen. I bought the 500x Super Feature, and this modifier gave me a 57x collect, though because of the high volatility, the round overall only paid back about a sixth of my steep buy-in.

The bowls dropped in around a lone wild, and it scooped up 57x in one go. Nice spin, but it wasn't enough to make the 500x buy pay back.

The real potential is in the meter. Every fourth wild gives you 10 extra spins and unlocks a modifier before the next multiplier tier kicks in (2x, 5x, and 10x). The modifiers are actually pretty cool. During one of my 120x buys, I reached the first retrigger. The game turned a random payline into high-paying symbols on spin 15 of 25, resulting in a solid 206x payout and pushing the round to return nearly double its price. When it hits, it feels incredibly rewarding.

The first retrigger doesn't just add spins, it fires WIN FETCH on the last spin of the batch. Here a whole payline turned into Dog Food, and that spin was the one that pushed the round past its price.

The Multiplying Coin Board

If the random draw gives you the Hold & Spin feature, you get a classic 3-respin board that resets every time a coin lands. But the multiplier you earned from the scatters only applies if you fill all 15 spots on the board. If you do manage to fill it, the game pays out your total, clears the board, and bumps you to the next multiplier level (climbing from 2x all the way to 25x).

Golden Retriever Hold & Spin with all 15 positions covered in coins at a x1 multiplier and three respins left
A full board is the only thing the reserved multiplier touches. Started at x1, so this fill paid face value and bought a restart rather than a big number.

If you run out of spins before filling the board, you just get the face value of the coins at your current multiplier. I had a run where I started with a 1x multiplier, filled the board once to reach 2x, but then fizzled out before filling it again. It only returned about a seventh of my 120x buy-in. It's a harsh reminder of how brutal Hold & Spin features can be if the board goes cold.

Golden Retriever Hold & Spin after the restart, five fresh coins on a cleared board and the win multiplier now x2
After the fill the board wipes, drops a few new coins and moves up to x2. Any more money has to come from here, and this time the respins ran dry first.

Worth Fetching After Big Bass?

Golden Retriever feels like Big Bass Bonanza's collect idea with more built around it. It trades a slightly lower RTP (96.52% compared to the older game's 96.71%) for a much higher max win cap of 5,000x, plus the addition of bonus buys and the coin game.

The coin board is actually a really nice change of pace for the genre. Instead of just paying a flat jackpot for a full screen like in Booming Games' upcoming Black Friday Cart Craze: Hold and Win, clearing the board here multiplies your cash and wipes it clean so you can keep playing.

It's a fun, highly volatile slot. The inability to choose your bonus after paying for a bonus buy is definitely an annoyance, but if you love the collection mechanics of Big Bass and want higher stakes and fresh features, this one is definitely worth a few spins.

The game tells you up front it's high volatility, and my three buys backed that up: one came back at nearly double its price, the other two well short.
