Features

Pirate themes are a dime a dozen in the slot world, but BF Games' upcoming Loot Island (dropping in November 2026) caught my eye because of how it handles its features. Instead of relying on a single, standard free spins round, the game splits the action across three different bonuses, each revolving around a specific type of wild symbol.

Loot Island base game: two bomb wilds on reels 1 and 3 complete a line of hooks under the red, golden and purple treasure chests
The bomb wild stands in for anything but the coins, and it never lands on reel 4, so a long base-game line needs the real symbol sitting there.

The Chests: Fun to Watch, But Keep Your Expectations in Check

If you've played slots lately, you'll recognize the setup: three colored chests sit above the reels, collecting purple, gold, and red coins as you play.

But the meters filling up are mostly just an illusion. They act as a tally rather than a countdown. A bonus can trigger off a single coin even if the chest is completely empty, so how full a chest looks says little about when it will open. When a bonus finally does pop, only that specific chest resets. It's a familiar mechanic (Microgaming uses similar setups in Ne Zha Triple Powers and in Moonlight Romance - Twilight, due out in October), but I always like to warn players not to get too attached to how "full" a meter looks.

A red feather coin on reel 3 lights up the red chest above the reels without starting the bonus
A coin drops in and its chest glows, but that point on the tally doesn't mean the bonus is any closer. Any single coin can open it, or none of them.

The Three Bonus Rounds

When you do trigger a bonus, you get 10 free spins on a separate reel set. The color of the chest determines your special wild for the round (note that these wilds don't stick; they reset on every spin):

  • Purple Chest (Multiplying Wild): Shell wilds land on four of the five reels. Each one doubles your win on that line, and they multiply each other. If you get four shells on a line, you're looking at a 16x multiplier.
  • Golden Chest (Expanding Wild): Scroll wilds drop on four of the five reels and expand to cover the entire column.
  • Red Chest (Flying Wild): This one randomly drops between one and four parrot wilds across the board on every single spin.

Shells only pay their doubling on a line they actually sit on. Two in one winning line make it x4, while a line that misses both pays flat.

Bonus Buys and Extra Chances

If you're impatient, there's an "Extra Chance" toggle. Paying 50% more per spin boosts your odds of triggering a chest, though it does slightly drop the base RTP from 96.04% to 96.01%.

You can also just buy the bonuses outright, and the math here is actually pretty interesting. The Multiplying Wild bonus costs 25x your bet, the Flying Wild is 35x, and the Expanding Wild is 50x. Oddly enough, the mid-priced Flying Wild gives you the best theoretical return at 96.13%. Buying a bonus leaves your base-game chest meters exactly as they were.

Three buys for the same ten games, and the price climbs from Multiplying to Flying to Expanding while the return barely moves.

I bought the Flying Wild bonus for 35x. The parrots showed up on every spin, sometimes alone, sometimes in groups of three. Half my free spins were dead. However, one lucky spin with a single parrot connected two lines of top-paying symbols for a 30x win. I walked away with 54x my bet, about one and a half times what the buy cost. Not a massive haul, but a fair return for a mid-tier buy.

Parrot wilds in the bought Flying Wild bonus carrying two winning lines across a sunset board
The parrots land somewhere new every game, and when two of them catch the right row the bonus can pay two lines on a single spin.

BF Games' Raiders of the East lists the same symbol collection, expanding wilds and random wilds. However, Loot Island plays on fixed paylines rather than Raiders' variable ways, and its max win is 3,503.5x your bet against Raiders' 3,168x.

It's a solid game with good variety. The most fascinating takeaway for me? Because the base game has no multipliers at all, the 3,368.5x spin maximum needs the compounding shells of the Multiplying Wild bonus. Ironically, that makes the cheapest feature on the board the one with the highest potential.
