A Chaos Crew sequel in everything but name

Hacksaw has brought the Chaos Crew back and just left the brand off the title. Unleashed Chaos is a 5x5 grid with 19 fixed paylines, running at 96.18% with a massive ceiling of 30,000x the bet. The familiar cat and zombie are both still here, now joined by a small bull terrier called a Glitch Dog. The whole game hangs off a bonus round that counts lives rather than spins, which makes for a completely unpredictable length.

The Crew, drawn full height either side of the grid: Cranky Cat on the left, Sketchy Skull on the right, and the new Glitch Dog tucked under his arm like a spray can.

The base game is mostly a waiting room

Wins form the old-fashioned way by matching symbols from the first reel across one of the 19 fixed lines, with the Cranky Cat wild filling gaps. The best symbol pays just 10x the bet for a five-of-a-kind, and five wilds pay exactly the same. On a game advertising a 30,000x top prize, that tiny paytable tells you exactly where the heavy math actually lives. The base game is simply a grind designed to hand you scatters.

A paying spin, and it clears the stake by twenty cents. The FS scatter on reel two is one of the three needed to open the cheapest bonus.

The Cranky Cat is the only thing down here with real teeth. It carries a multiplier value of x2, x3, x4, x5, x10, or x20, and multiplies any win it helps create. Two cats in the same combination multiply against each other rather than adding, so a pair of x20s turns into x400 on that line. The catch is that a big cat multiplier on a tiny line win still results in a fairly small payout.

A wild on the board and nothing to show for it. The Cranky Cat multiplies a win it joins, but it cannot make one on its own below five of them.

There is one base-game feature called EPIC DROP. You have to land the five low symbols to spell CHAOS horizontally across a row in exact order, which is a very narrow ask. Hitting it awards exactly one reward spin where every symbol turns into a dead tile, multiplier counters appear above the reels, and the letters become Glitch Dogs that jump around to boost the multipliers. After that single spin, you are dumped right back to normal play.

Counting lives instead of free spins

Landing three scatters triggers CTRL + ALT + CHAOS, which ditches paying symbols entirely for a reel-multiplier setup. The grid empties out into dead tiles, a counter sits above each reel starting at 1x, and the only symbols that matter are the ones feeding those counters. At the end, the five counters are added together and multiplied by your bet.

Three spins on the meter and the counters have barely moved. Everything on the grid is a dead symbol, so a spin either feeds the multipliers above or it does nothing at all.

The part that makes this round different is the lack of a spin count. You start with three lives, and every new Crazy Multiplier or Glitch Dog that lands resets the meter back to three. Run out of lives and the round is over. A bad bonus is just three dead spins, while a good one keeps going as long as the grid keeps feeding it. You never know how much runway you actually have left.

Good news comes in a few identical-looking forms that reveal their true nature once they land. The Sketchy Skull adds its value to the counter above its own reel, anywhere from 1x up to 100x, while the Cranky Cat multiplies that counter instead. Epic versions of both symbols do the same thing to all five counters at once. The Glitch Dog acts as a wildcard, glitching into one of the other special symbols and refilling the life meter to maximum.

The last spin, with the lives gone. Add the five counters and you have the round's whole result: 6 and 6 and 8 and 15 and 6, which is 41 times the stake.

Hitting the 30,000x ceiling ends the round on the spot. Any remaining lives are discarded, which matters more here than in most games because a round with no fixed length is exactly the kind that could easily have kept running.

Upgraded tiers and the bonus you cannot buy

Four scatters trigger THE KORRUPTED K9, which is the same round but with the deck stacked in your favor. It opens with at least four Crazy Multipliers and a Glitch Dog already on the grid, and adds a Chaos Upgrade symbol to the pool. That upgrade adds its own value to every multiplier and Glitch Dog inside a 3x3 square around it. It acts as a massive multiplier on the multipliers, though it disappears by the next spin and does not refill your lives.

Five scatters trigger AN EPIC GLITCH!, starting with a full grid of Crazy Multipliers, a Chaos Upgrade, and at least one Glitch Dog. This is the fast track to the big payouts, and it is the only one of the three bonuses you cannot buy directly. The nearest option is a 200x purchase of THE KORRUPTED K9, which has a chance to upgrade into it. Paying 200x for a mere possibility is a strange setup.

None of the three bonus tiers can retrigger. Scatters do not land inside any bonus, so you cannot chain a standard feature into an upgraded one. The random K9 upgrade is the single exception.

Paying for a better return

The buy menu offers four different ways to pay, and they reverse the usual slot arithmetic. CTRL + ALT + CHAOS costs 100x the bet, and THE KORRUPTED K9 costs 200x. There are also two bet modes that charge their price on every single spin: BONUSHUNT FEATURESPINS at 5x, and BYTE ME EPIC DROP FEATURESPINS at 200x. That last one guarantees at least five Crazy Multipliers land every spin but turns the scatters off entirely.

Playing the base game normally returns 96.18%. BONUSHUNT returns 96.29%, THE KORRUPTED K9 is 96.36%, BYTE ME sits at 96.38%, and the standard CTRL + ALT + CHAOS returns 96.41%. Every single purchase hands back more than the standard game. The usual arrangement is a buy priced at a small discount to the base return, so getting a higher return for skipping the grind is a welcome twist.

Two of these say BUY and two say ACTIVATE, which is the whole difference: the first pair are one round, the second pair change every spin until you stop them.

Spray paint and dead symbols

The game commits hard to a street-art vandalism aesthetic. Everything is drawn in marker and spray paint on a graffitied wall in purple, magenta, and acid green. The premium symbols are bizarre, including a slice of pizza with colored dots, a dripping purple brain, a scratched STOP sign, a red rocket-shaped fish with teeth, and a severed green hand giving a thumbs-up. It is deliberately juvenile, but it works because the artwork is excellent and never breaks character.

The boldest design choice happens in the bonus round, where the color drains to charcoal and violet. The grid fills with worn stencil tiles reading SCAM, HACK, CHAOS, CREW, SAW, WHAT, and KEY. These are the dead symbols, and they do absolutely nothing. Filling a board with twenty-five joke tiles that cannot pay is a confident look that most studios would never sign off on.

The reel-multiplier bonus has real architecture, but it is bolted to a base game that functions entirely as a waiting room. We like how the life meter makes a long, drawn-out round possible instead of just promising a fixed set of spins. The four multiplier symbols also ensure that two identical-looking reveals can be worth wildly different amounts. Anyone who enjoys the Chaos Crew format and does not want to sit through the base game to reach it will find plenty to like here, provided they are prepared for the brutal reality of a bonus that can easily end after just three dead spins. It is a volatile, uncompromising game that knows exactly what its audience wants.
