Starburst Galaxy Slot Review

The cosmic sequel shares the gems and nothing else. Wins are matches of three or more in a straight line anywhere on the board, every win without a Wild leaves one behind at its centre, and five winning combinations in a row bank a random feature. The fifth one blows the grid out to 7x7, where seven gold BARs pay 250x.

Starburst Galaxy Slot Overview

Starburst Galaxy moves the familiar gems out into open space and builds a completely different game around them. There are no paylines. Wins are matches: three or more of the same symbol in an unbroken vertical or horizontal line, anywhere on the 5x5 grid, and every winning group clears so fresh symbols can drop into the hole it left.

What makes it tick is a chase that lives inside a single spin. String five winning combinations together and the game owes you a random feature. Keep the chain going and the fifth of those features is Galaxy Star, which blows the board out to 7x7 and rains Wilds across it. That bigger grid is where the maths gets interesting, because the six- and seven-of-a-kind pays only exist up there. Seven gold BARs in a line is worth 250x on its own.

NetEnt bills this as the cosmic sequel to Starburst, which holds up for the artwork and nothing else. The 2012 game is a ten-line both-ways slot with expanding wilds. This is an avalanche game with a growing board and a queue of features waiting to fire.

Theme & Design

There is no reel frame at all, which is the first thing you notice. Symbols hang in black space with a huge pink-lit planet curving across the lower left and a banded gas giant edging into the top right corner, and the gems catch enough light that the missing frame never looks like a shortcut. The set is the one everyone recognises, redrawn with more depth to it: purple and yellow diamonds, green and orange hexagons, a blue square-cut stone, a chrome-and-red 7, and a gold BAR wrapped in a glowing halo ring. Five small purple star sockets run down the left edge and light up one by one as the win chain builds, with a gold-bordered plaque beneath them sitting empty until a multiplier lands in it.

The gripe is that same left column. For long stretches it just sits there dark and blank, which makes the whole left third of the layout look unfinished, and the gems themselves are a polish pass on 2012 rather than a new idea. Chrome capitals and a lens flare behind the logo, purple bauble for the buy panel, green spin button. Clean, dark, and unmistakably a Starburst game.

Features & How They Work

Win matches and Avalanches

Three or more matching symbols in a straight line, vertical or horizontal, with no gaps, paid wherever they land. The winners vanish, everything above them falls into place, and the board is scored again. That repeats until a drop pays nothing. Three Scatters clear the same way and start a cascade too.

Wilds you build yourself

Wilds never drop in on their own here, which is the cleverest rule in the game. Any winning combination that does not already contain a Wild leaves one behind at its centre when it clears, so the board slowly seeds itself with substitutes just from playing. Even-length wins place the Wild centre-left on a horizontal or upper-centre on a vertical. Two wins that cross leave one Wild each, or share a single Wild if they intersect exactly at both centres.

Feature Generator

Every five consecutive winning combinations award one of five random features. They go into a queue and fire one at a time whenever the board finally runs out of wins. Destroy wipes one or more entire symbol types off the grid. Random Wilds converts 3 to 9 paying symbols. Expanding Wilds turns every Wild on the board into a stack of three vertical Wilds. Line Transform fills a whole row or reel with a single symbol. Upgrade promotes symbols of one type into a higher-paying one. Progress wipes at the start of every new spin, so this is a within-spin chase and never a meter you can grind toward over a session.

Galaxy Star and the 7x7 grid

The fifth Feature Generator award is always Galaxy Star. The grid expands to 7x7, a 3x3 Starburst Wild drops into it, and once those wins resolve another 4 to 8 ordinary Wilds appear on top. Anything still sitting in the Generator queue fires afterwards, on the bigger board, which is exactly when you want it. The Galaxy Meter starts running the moment the 3x3 Wild lands and every winning combination adds to it. Reach 50 and Galaxy Star is awarded again, with the overflow carried straight into the next fill. Like the Generator, it resets each spin.

Mega Star and the Multiplier Collect Meter

Three Scatters in one spin award Mega Star, and it jumps ahead of any pending Generator features. Once the board is out of wins a 2x2 Starburst Wild is placed, then 2 to 5 more Wilds drop in on the Avalanche that follows. The Scatters that triggered it can each carry x2, x3, x5, x10 or x25, and those values load into a meter that multiplies every win for the remainder of the round. Land a couple of big ones early in a long chain and the round changes character entirely.

The Elevate panel (buys)

Five paid options, one active per round, and it stays switched on until you turn it off. Bonus Boost costs 3x and simply improves the odds of reaching Galaxy Star, so it works like an ante bet. Mega Star at 10x guarantees a spin holding three Scatters. Boosted Mega Star at 50x adds the multiplier meter, with at least two of the three Scatters carrying a value. Galaxy Star at 100x guarantees the 7x7 grid. Galaxy Star Bonanza at 500x starts you on the expanded grid with all five Generator features already banked and a random x2 to x75 multiplier attached. The part worth knowing: every one of those tiers returns the same 96.00% as the base game. Most studios shave a few hundredths off a bonus buy, and this one does not.

No free spins

There is no free spins round, no bonus mode you leave the base game to enter. Every feature in the game, including Galaxy Star and the expanded grid, resolves inside one paid spin. When the cascades stop, the round is over.

How It Plays

It hits often and it pays small. A 24% hit rate keeps the counter ticking, but a three-of-a-kind on a low gem returns a quarter of the stake and three BARs only gets you back to even, so the balance drifts down through spins that technically kept winning. That is the trade the game makes to fund its ceiling.

The tension sits in those five sockets on the left. Watching a chain get to three, four combinations and then stall is worse than a dead spin, because a dead spin costs you nothing but the stake and a stalled chain costs you a feature that was two drops away. Everything resets when the reels stop, so there is no accumulating progress to soften a bad stretch, and medium-high volatility means those stretches arrive.

When it does connect, it connects properly. A long cascade that seeds Wilds, banks a queue and then tips into the 7x7 grid can run for a minute or more, and because the queued features fire on the expanded board the payouts land in the columns that actually matter. That gap between the grind and the good round is wide, probably wider than casual Starburst fans expect from the name on the box. The 500x buy tells you where NetEnt thinks the fun is, and honestly they are not wrong.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Wild-from-win rule means the board builds its own substitutes, so nothing feels wasted
  • Every buy tier returns the full 96.00% RTP with no penalty, which is rare
  • Genuinely generous paytable on the expanded grid, topping out at 250x for seven BARs
  • Galaxy Star is repeatable within a round through the Galaxy Meter

Cons

  • Base game wins are tiny, and a 24% hit rate mostly returns fractions of the stake
  • Everything resets each spin, so a stalled four-win chain leaves you with nothing to show
  • No free spins round at all, which will disappoint anyone expecting a bonus to escape into
  • Symbol art is a polish pass on the 2012 set rather than anything new

Verdict

7/10

This is a far more ambitious game than the name suggests, and that cuts both ways. The Feature Generator, the self-seeding Wilds and the 7x7 expansion stack into something with real depth, but the person loading it because they liked Starburst in 2012 is walking into a game with a completely different rhythm and a much longer wait for the good part. Anyone who plays a lot of avalanche slots will read it faster.

The paytable is the reason to stick with it. 250x for a single line of seven BARs is not a number you see often, and the 17,288x ceiling is built out of long chains on the big grid rather than a stacked multiplier trick. Charging 500x for the Bonanza buy is steep, though at least the RTP does not drop when you pay it.

NetEnt could have shipped a straight reskin and sold plenty of it on the name alone. They built something with actual ideas in it instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the max win in Starburst Galaxy?

17,288x your bet. It comes from long cascade chains on the expanded 7x7 grid rather than from any single symbol combination.

Does Starburst Galaxy have free spins?

No. There is no free spins round. Every feature, including Galaxy Star and Mega Star, resolves inside a single paid base spin.

How do you trigger the Galaxy Star feature?

Five consecutive winning combinations award a Feature Generator feature, and the fifth Generator feature awarded is always Galaxy Star. It expands the grid to 7x7, drops a 3x3 Starburst Wild and then adds 4 to 8 more Wilds. You can also buy it directly for 100x.

What is the RTP of Starburst Galaxy?

96.00% on the default build, though operators can also run 94.00% or 88.00% versions. Unusually, all five Elevate buy options return 96.00% as well, with no reduction for buying in.

Can you buy the bonus in Starburst Galaxy?

Yes, through the Elevate panel. Bonus Boost costs 3x, Mega Star 10x, Boosted Mega Star 50x, Galaxy Star 100x and Galaxy Star Bonanza 500x. One option is active per round until you switch it off.

Is Starburst Galaxy suitable for players under 18?

No. Real-money play is restricted to players aged 18 or over, or the legal minimum age in your jurisdiction. Set deposit and time limits before you start, and treat the demo as entertainment rather than practice for a payout.
