Book of Toro was born from Wild Toro's 5th anniversary celebration in 2021 - ELK released three Toro games within two months, and this was the second. The pitch: take the "Book of" expanding symbol mechanic that Play'n GO popularized with Book of Dead, and bolt on Wild Toro's Walking Wild system where a bull charges across the reels knocking enemies aside. Sounds like it shouldn't work. It does.
Five reels, three rows, ten paylines. Standard Book template. But Toro shows up only on reel 5 as a Walking Wild, moving one reel leftward per respin until he falls off reel 1. Mummies are blockers that interact with him. When Toro meets mummies, the Toro Goes Wild feature triggers and he charges through them, leaving wild symbols in his wake. Meanwhile, Book symbols act as both wilds and scatter triggers for the free spins bonus where expanding symbols take over entire reels.
In a standard Book game, the base game between bonuses is mostly dead time. Book of Toro fixes that with two active base game mechanics.
Two or more mummies trigger a Mummy Respin. Mummies lock into position and stay sticky during the respin. Additional mummies extending the sequence is possible. All Mummy Respins end the moment Toro appears on reel 5.
When Toro lands while mummies are on the grid (or mummies land while Toro is already walking), Toro Goes Wild activates. Toro moves vertically first, then horizontally, charging through every mummy on the grid and converting each mummy position to a wild. He attacks mummies on his own reel first, then sweeps left, then right. The result is a grid peppered with wilds from mummy positions, plus Toro himself continuing his walk leftward with respins.
Book symbols become sticky while any Toro is visible on the grid. That's a subtle but important detail: during Toro's walk across 4-5 respins, any books that land stay put, building toward the three needed for the bonus trigger.
Three books trigger 10 free spins, four books give 15, five books award 20. A random symbol is chosen for expansion at the start. When enough instances of that symbol land on separate reels during a free spin (2+ for premium symbols, 3+ for low-value), the symbol expands to fill those entire reels and pays scatter wins.
Toro and mummies remain active during free spins. Free spins pause when Toro appears or Mummy Respins trigger - the bonus resumes when all Walking Wilds have left the grid and all respins complete. The expanding symbol feature stays active throughout, so Toro's wild trail can sit on the grid alongside fully expanded reels of the chosen symbol.
Retriggering works: three more connected books during free spins add another batch of free spins and an additional expanding symbol (up to 3 maximum). After the third expanding symbol, further retriggerers only add spins.
The buy menu runs: Mummy Respin at 10x (guaranteed mummy appearance), Guaranteed Toro at 25x (Toro on reel 5 with sticky books during his walk), Mini Bonus at 50x (3 spins with active expanding symbol), Bonus at 100x (direct free spins entry), and Super Bonus at 500x (free spins with progressive multiplier, sticky books, and sticky expansion symbols when they keep landing).
That 500x Super Bonus adds a progressive multiplier that increases by one step at the beginning of each respin and free spin. Combined with sticky books and conditions for keeping expansion symbols locked, it's the tier where the 10,000x ceiling becomes realistic. Note that 2,500x is the maximum from any single spin - the full 10,000x requires accumulation across the bonus round.
Book of Toro lands at 95.0% RTP, sitting between ELK's legacy 96%+ games and their current 94.0% standard. It's a transitional number. The 7/10 volatility rating means it's aggressive without being ELK's most extreme, and 23.0% hit frequency keeps the base game reasonably active between Toro walks and mummy encounters.
The community rated it 4.1 out of 5 - "Very Good" territory. The main criticism is that the base game between features can feel flat, which is standard for Book-style slots. But when Toro is walking, mummies are locked, books are sticking, and expanding symbols are covering reels during the bonus... the mashup delivers exactly what the anniversary celebration promised.
