Cubes 2 doesn't spin. There are no reels, no paylines, no ways to win. You get a 5x5 grid filled with colorful 3D cubes in six colors, and you're looking for clusters of 5 or more connected cubes of the same color. That's it. Connect them horizontally or vertically - diagonal doesn't count.
All six colors pay identically. A 5-cube cluster pays 0.1x. Eight cubes jump to 1.5x. Twelve to fourteen cubes hit 10x. And a massive cluster of 25 or more pays 40x your bet from the base paytable alone. The winning isn't about which color lands - it's about how many connect.
When a winning cluster forms, the grid expands by one cube in every direction. That 5x5 becomes 7x7. If the expanded grid creates an even bigger cluster (higher payout tier), it expands again to 9x9, then to a maximum 11x11. The win isn't paid until the grid stops growing. On an 11x11 grid, you have 121 positions instead of 25 - the probability of forming a massive single-color cluster jumps significantly.
Four corner positions on the initial 5x5 grid carry X markers. When a winning cluster includes a corner X, the multiplier takes a value equal to the cluster size. A 9-cube cluster touching one corner gets a 9x multiplier on that win. Touch two corners with the same cluster and the values add: that 9-cube cluster becomes 18x. The math scales quickly at larger grid sizes where clusters reach into multiple corners.
Standard Free Spins trigger when you form 5 winning clusters in different colors during one spin sequence - meaning all 5 of those colors had at least one cluster. You start with 5 free spins and pick mystery cubes that reveal either a sticky color or additional spins (up to 12 total). Once you reveal a color, that color becomes sticky for the rest of the bonus. The grid doesn't shrink between spins, so sticky cubes accumulate on whatever expanded size you reached. Color Blast levels award extra payouts when sticky cubes hit certain thresholds.
Multi-Color Free Spins are rarer - all 4 corners need to show the same color on the initial spin. This mode gives 5-10 free spins where multiple colors become sticky simultaneously, though the max win in this mode caps at 7,500x compared to over 10,500x in standard free spins.
Cubes 2 sits in Hacksaw's POCKETZ collection - compact, mobile-first games with minimal UI chrome. The original Cubes had the X multiplier in the center position and medium volatility. The sequel moved it to the four corners, boosted the max win from around 2,400x to over 10,500x, and added both free spin modes. The visual style is clean and geometric: soft lighting, floating 3D shapes, no characters, no narrative. Even the soundtrack offers multiple options (Ministry of CUBES, Cafe del CUBES, the CUBES2 Anthem).
Buy options let you jump directly into either Free Spins or Multi-Color Free Spins. The game is from early 2021, so it's been around for a while. But nothing else in Hacksaw's catalog plays quite like this. If you're tired of paylines and reels and want something that feels closer to a puzzle than a slot, this is one of the few games that actually delivers on that idea.
