Diablo Reels splits the screen into two 3x3 reel sets stacked on top of each other. The lower grid plays like a standard classic slot - 5 paylines, standard symbols, nothing unusual. The upper grid sits dark and dormant. It only wakes up when a Nudging Wild climbs high enough to break through.
That vertical progression is the entire identity of this slot. Most classic-format games keep things flat: spin, match, collect. Diablo Reels adds a literal second floor to the experience, and getting there requires the right wild to land in the right spot.
A Nudging Wild lands on the lower grid and starts pushing its reel upward, one position at a time. Each nudge triggers a respin. Once the wild nudges past the top row of the lower grid and exits the screen, it reappears on the upper grid - and both reel sets activate simultaneously.
On the upper reels, Nudging Wilds carry multipliers. A 2x or 5x tag attached to the wild means every winning combination it touches gets boosted. These multipliers are additive when multiple wilds overlap, so two wilds on the upper grid during the same spin create real spikes in payout.
The interaction gets better when a Wild Stack appears. Three wilds filling an entire reel on one grid trigger the Wild Stack Respin - the same reel on both grids gets covered in wilds, and you get one respin with that massive wild coverage. If a Nudging Wild was already active during this, the stack stays sticky until the nudging sequence finishes.
Three scatter symbols on the lower grid trigger 10 free spins. Both reel sets stay active for the entire bonus round. The upper grid removes all low-value symbols, leaving only mids, highs, wilds, and the Nudging Wild variants.
Free spins pause whenever a Nudging Wild or Wild Stack feature triggers. The counter doesn't tick down during those respins, so a good chain of nudges and stacks effectively extends the bonus beyond 10 spins. Retriggering adds another 10. The max win reaches 2,500x during these sequences - the upper grid's stripped paytable and multiplied wilds doing most of the work.
RTP is 96.3%, which stands out against ELK's current catalog. Post-2022 releases all run at 94.0%, so Diablo Reels belongs to an era when ELK offered better returns. Hit frequency is 18.1% - roughly one win every five or six spins, skewed toward smaller payouts on the lower grid.
The 2,500x cap is modest. Even in 2020, that number didn't turn heads. For a high-volatility game (8 out of 10 on ELK's scale), the ceiling feels low. You're playing for the mechanic, not the multiplier. The dual-grid climb and the moment both reel sets light up - that's what keeps the spins interesting.
Visually, it's dark navy blues and burning reds. Skeleton hands clutching roses, fire-wrapped symbols on the upper reels, a Day of the Dead mood that's more atmospheric than flashy. As the 7th entry in ELK's Classic series, it takes the retro 3-reel format and bends it into something with real vertical tension. No buy bonus, no expanding grid, no avalanche cascades. Just two grids and a wild that knows which way is up.
