When NetEnt dropped Aftermath in September 2026, it didn't come with the built-in hype of a sequel. Instead, this post-apocalyptic scrapyard slot stands on its own. If you've played their earlier game, Elk Hunter, you'll feel right at home with the basic layout, but Aftermath cranks up the heat with persistent multipliers in the free spins and a pretty aggressive feature-buy menu.

Aftermath base game on the 4x6 scrapyard grid, Colander Man and Crowned Leader stacks with a Wild on reel 4 and the generator meter reading x4
Three cascades in one base spin and the meter is already on x4. It's a nice push, but it all resets the moment you hit spin again.

The Grid, the Multipliers, and the Modifiers

The game uses a scatter-pays mechanic. You start on a 4x6 grid, and you need eight or more matching symbols anywhere in view to get a payout. Winning symbols disappear, new ones cascade down, and every win bumps your global multiplier up by +1.

In the base game, this multiplier is a nice little boost, but it resets between spins. The real chase is the free spins feature (triggered by three or more scatters), where that multiplier carries over and applies to everything.

To keep dead drops interesting, NetEnt included four special modifier symbols that trigger after a cascade finishes:

  • The Bomb: Destroys surrounding symbols and actually doubles your current multiplier.
  • The Upgrade: Turns low-paying junk symbols into premium ones.
  • The Change: Drops a block of matching symbols.
  • The Purge: This is the one you want. It wipes out all medium and low-paying symbols along with the walls, and in the bonus any space it opens, up to 6x8, stays open for the rest of the round.
Aftermath base game after two Bombs blew open locked positions, the grid wider and taller than 4x6, meter at x6 and smoke rising beside it
Two Bombs doubled the meter and blew the walls back past 4x6, but nothing connected afterwards, so the x6 had nothing to multiply.

The Two Bonus Rounds (and the Brutal Reality of Feature Buys)

If you manage to land a "Super Scatter" during the trigger, you get upgraded from the Standard bonus to the Super tier. The difference is huge. The Standard bonus occasionally drops wild symbols that add +2 to your multiplier, but they aren't guaranteed. The Super tier, however, guarantees a wild worth between +3 and +10 on every single spin.

Last Super Bonus Spin in Aftermath with a Crowned Leader block highlighted, a Wild worth +5 and the meter on x49
The guaranteed wilds kept feeding the meter all the way to x49, and the round still finished short of its 500x price.

I bought my way into both bonus rounds, and it was a great reminder of how volatile this game is.

I bought the Super bonus for a hefty 500x my stake. Even with a few dead spins, those guaranteed wilds pushed my multiplier to a massive x49 by the end. But the base payouts were so low that the round only paid back about 315x my stake. It looked incredibly exciting, but I still took a loss on the buy.

Final spin of the 100x Bonus Spins in Aftermath with the play area opened to its full 6x8, a Purge symbol on reel 3 and the meter at x17
In the standard bonus the opened space stays open, so by the last spin I had the full 6x8 board, and that's where this buy came back in profit.

Ironically, I had better luck with the Standard 100x buy. It took about a dozen spins to build up a x17 multiplier, but with the board opened to 6x8 by the last spin, it paid out about 158x my stake, netting a decent little profit.

The "Elevate" Menu: Proceed with Caution

NetEnt includes a five-tier "Elevate" menu for players who want to buy their way into the action. Outside of the 100x and 500x bonuses, the cheaper options are highly unpredictable:

  • 25x: Gives you one spin with a pre-boosted multiplier.
  • 10x: Guarantees a special modifier symbol.
  • 5x: Boosts your chance of naturally triggering the bonus.
Aftermath spin bought with Power Boost, the x5 to x10 badge by the bet, the spin button marked 25 and the meter starting at x10
Power Boost costs 25x a spin and starts the meter anywhere from x5 to x10, which only matters if a win lands under it.

Where it Fits in the Market

Structurally, Aftermath is a lot like Elk Hunter: they share the same 96.05% RTP and a 4x6 scatter-pays board. But while Elk Hunter's max win is a modest 2,035x, Aftermath swings for the fences with a 25,000x max win.

If you look around the broader market, the pricing and layout feel very similar to Playson's Golden Penny x1000: Super Wheel, or PG Soft's Zombie Blasters, which shares the theme and pairs its cascades with a multiplier wheel.

What defines Aftermath isn't the post-apocalyptic theme; it's the math model. You aren't going to hit that 25,000x max win by just landing a lucky screen of premium symbols. The big money here relies entirely on compounding features, specifically, surviving long enough to build a big multiplier, and then praying for a Bomb symbol to double it at the last possible second.

It's a fun, highly capable slot, but it is incredibly volatile. Play it for the compounding multiplier mechanic, but be very careful with those feature buys.

Super Bonus Spins in Aftermath with two spins left, a Wild adding +6 to a meter on x28 and a 70.00 win over boxed Colander Man columns
This is the compounding the big wins depend on: a +6 wild landing on a meter that's already carried to x28.
