If you're a fan of scatter-pays slots, Backseat Gaming's Zombie Dawgs (released in August 2026) is definitely an interesting one. It takes a quirky, cartoonish zombie-dog theme and pairs it with a tumbling grid. But the real draw here isn't the theme: it's a persistent multiplier mechanic that can either be incredibly frustrating or hugely rewarding.

Zombie Dawgs 6x5 board in the Legendary Bonus with nine dog tags paying, four reel multipliers lit at x6 under reels 1, 2, 3 and 5
Nine dog tags are a fraction of the bet on the paytable, but with four lit discs at x6 multiplying each other they became a 259x spin.

How the Multipliers and Bonuses Actually Work

The game offers three tiers of bonus buys, all giving you 10 free spins: Normal Bonus (100x your bet), Super Bonus (300x), and a very steep Legendary Bonus (1,000x). The only actual difference between these tiers is where the six multiplier discs at the bottom of the screen start, at x1, x2, or x3. If you prefer to grind it out, there's a Bonus Boost ante bet that doubles your stake to triple your chances of triggering the feature naturally.

A Zombie Paw on reel 5 adding three free spins, with only the multiplier disc under reel 5 lit green and the other five grey
Every disc reads x3 here, but only the one under the paw's reel actually counts. The other five are just numbers until a paw lands on them.

Here's the problem with the bonus rounds: high multipliers on those discs mean nothing on their own. For a disc to actually apply to your wins, a "Zombie Paw" symbol has to land on that specific reel to activate it (which also gives you +3 free spins). Because you can only land one paw per reel, the absolute maximum you can get is 28 free spins with all six reels lit.

A gold Super Nuclear Multiplier at the top of reel 3 after raising all six reel multipliers to x4, with reels 1 and 5 active
One Super Nuclear Multiplier lifts all six discs at once, yet with only two reels lit the win is paid at 16x, not at anything bigger.

During the spins, you can land Normal Nuclear Multipliers (which boost the disc on their own reel) or Super Nuclear Multipliers (which boost all six). And here is the game's biggest selling point: once activated, these discs multiply each other rather than just adding together.

My Experience with the 1,000x Legendary Bonus

I bit the bullet and bought the Legendary Bonus for 1,000x my bet. My first few spins perfectly highlighted the game's brutal volatility. I hit a small win over six discs that were sitting at x3, but because no paws had landed yet, the multipliers stayed dark and I just got the flat base payout.

Eventually, the paws started dropping. I went through a painful stretch of dead spins, but the paws kept extending my life by adding extra rounds. Finally, toward the end, the setup did its job. Four paws had activated four reels, and a couple of Super Nuclear Multipliers had pushed every disc up to x6. I hit a tiny base payout that was suddenly multiplied by 1,296x (since four x6 discs multiply out to that number), turning a fraction of my bet into a 259x win on a single spin. I ended up getting back about half of my 1,000x buy-in. It was a losing bonus, but it showed exactly how quickly this game can explode if you get lucky late in the round.

The last free spin of the Legendary Bonus settled with the spin counter at zero and four of six reel multipliers lit at x6
Two reels never got their paw, and that's the difference between a round that comes back at about half its 1,000x price and one that runs at the cap.

How It Compares to Other Slots

If you've played Backseat Gaming's Hades Domain, Zombie Dawgs will feel very familiar. They share the same layout and bonus tiers. Hades might be the better value for some players: it has a higher 15,000x max win, and its Legendary buy is half the price at 500x. However, they play very differently. Hades uses multipliers that add together and reset after every spin, whereas Zombie Dawgs builds a persistent row that multiplies.

Outside of this studio, the closest match is Pragmatic Play's Wonders of Aztec, due out in October, which also has a 10,000x cap and six multipliers above the reels. The difference is that Aztec adds its multipliers together, and in its free spins you have to land a new multiplier symbol to trigger the saved total. Zombie Dawgs is much more aggressive. Because the active discs multiply each other and apply to every winning tumble once a reel is lit, the math gets crazy fast. If you manage to get a fifth active reel to x6, your combined multiplier shoots past 7,700x.

Zombie Dawgs is a highly volatile, all-or-nothing game, with a 96.01% RTP that a casino can also run at 94.01%, 92.01% or 90.01%. The 1,000x bonus buy is incredibly risky, and watching high multipliers sit inactive because a paw won't drop can be maddening. But if you have the patience (and the bankroll) for the setup, the fact that a full set of lit reels can cap out the game's 10,000x max win on a single, ordinary combination makes it a thrill to play.

The same four bonus tiers Backseat Gaming sells elsewhere, with the Legendary Bonus at 1,000x, twice what Hades Domain asks for its top tier.
