A cartoon hunter fires five shots across the reels whenever the Hunting Season symbol lands, turning star-rated animals into coins and traps worth up to 500x apiece. Nine paylines pay almost nothing on their own, so everything rides on the hunt, three separate bonus rounds and a 5,000x ceiling.

Great Game Serengeti Slot Overview

A cartoon big-game hunter squats on a rock beside the reels with his rifle up, and every so often he takes five shots at the animals that just landed. Any animal he hits stops being a paying symbol and becomes a coin. That conversion is the whole game.

This is the second Great Game from Hacksaw, after the Rockies original ran the same hunting idea through North American mountains. Serengeti keeps the 5x3 grid and the 5,000x ceiling but drops to 9 paylines from 17, and adds a pre-spin modifier called a Stampede Reveal that forces the hunt to happen. RTP is 96.29%, volatility sits at a middling 3 out of 5, and there are three separate bonus rounds plus five different things you can buy.

Theme & Design

The base game sits at dusk on a flat, graphic African savannah: burnt orange sky, acacia trees in silhouette, a river catching the last of the sun. The reels hang in a wooden frame wrapped with a red-and-blue tribal band, and five red arrowhead targets stick up above them like tent pegs. Low symbols are chunky stone-carved letters, which is filler, but the animals are good. Each one is a portrait mounted on a coloured shield - ostrich on pink, giraffe on lime, zebra on blue, rhino on gold, a snarling lion on red - with a row of one to four stars printed underneath. The Wild is a purple-and-teal chameleon lounging on a leaf, which has nothing to do with a safari and is somehow the best-looking symbol in the set. The hunter himself never moves much; he crouches in his khaki shirt and wide-brim hat and does the one thing he is there for. When the bonus starts the whole sky flips to bright midday blue over green grassland, so the game visibly changes the time of day when it changes gear.

Features & How They Work

Hunting Season

One Hunting Season symbol can sit on the grid at a time, and when it lands the hunt runs after every regular line win has paid. A target hangs above each of the five reels and five shots go out left to right, each one either hitting or missing. Animals on a hit reel turn into Coins or Traps, and the stars printed on them set the floor for what they turn into: one star is at least a Bronze Coin, two at least Silver, three at least Gold, and a four-star animal becomes a Trap instead. Coins pay as a multiple of the bet, running from 0.2x at the bottom of Bronze up to 500x for the biggest Diamond. Traps collect the value of every Coin and every other Trap on the grid and add it to their own, resolving top to bottom then left to right, and the round pays out everything on the grid once the collecting stops. A Wild caught by a shot picks up a multiplier of x2, x3, x4, x5, x10 or x20 and applies it to between one and five Coin or Trap symbols at the very end. That last step is where the four-figure multipliers come from.

Stampede Reveals

Before any symbols land on a spin, a Stampede Reveal can fire. When it does, a Hunting Season symbol is guaranteed to arrive and no low-paying letters can land at all, so the grid shows up packed with animals and the hunt is already booked. This is the one new idea Serengeti brought to the series, and it makes the good spins better without moving the 5,000x cap it inherited from Rockies.

Khaki Quest (8 free spins)

Three scatters at once gives 8 free spins with a raised Hunting Season rate, and the savannah switches from dusk to bright midday for the duration. Nothing else changes - identical rules, just the trigger symbol showing up more often. Two more FS during the round add two spins, three add four. Eight spins is short, and a cold run through it is over in under a minute.

Roaring Reign (10 free spins)

Four scatters gives 10 free spins and swaps the random Stampede Reveal for something you can watch build. A Lion Bar outside the grid advances one step for every low-paying symbol sitting on a reel that gets hit during a hunt, and at 10 steps the next spin gets a guaranteed Stampede Reveal before the bar resets. Overflow progress carries into the fresh bar rather than vanishing, which is a small mercy and a rare one. Extra scatters extend the round the same way: 2 FS for two spins, 3 FS for four.

Zebrawl, the hidden bonus

Five FS scatters at the same time opens Zebrawl, badged in-game as a Hidden Epic Bonus. Ten free spins on the Roaring Reign ruleset, Lion Bar included, with a Hunting Season symbol guaranteed on every single spin. FS symbols cannot land inside it, so there are no retriggers and no way to stretch it out. It is also not purchasable, which makes it the only part of the game there is no shortcut to.

Buy menu and FeatureSpins

The BUY BONUS button opens five purchases, and they are not all the same kind of thing. Khaki Quest at 60x and Roaring Reign at 200x are one-off buys of those rounds. The other three are FeatureSpins: BonusHunt at 2x makes every spin three times more likely to trigger a bonus, Hunting Season at 50x guarantees the hunt symbol lands, and Big Five at 100x guarantees a Stampede Reveal. Those three stay switched on and charge on every spin until you press DISABLE, which is worth understanding before tapping the 100x one. Each purchase carries its own RTP, and the spread is not trivial: BonusHunt at 96.35% is the best number in the game, while Khaki Quest at 96.10% is the only option that sits below the base 96.29%.

How Great Game Serengeti Plays

Most spins here are quiet. Nine lines on a 5x3 grid at these payouts means the base game trickles, and a session settles into waiting for one symbol to turn up. When it does the game changes character completely. The reels stop mattering and you are reading star counts instead, working out which of the five reels you need the shots to land on.

That anticipation is the smart part of the design. The stars are printed on the animals before anything is decided, so the good version of the outcome is visible a second before the rifle goes off - a four-star Lion parked under target three, two Rhinos on reel one. Then some of the shots miss. Four out of five is a decent round. The misses are where it actually gets decided, and there is nothing to do about them but watch.

The bonus rounds are the same rhythm at higher density, and Roaring Reign has more shape to it than the others because the Lion Bar gives you something to track between hunts. For my money that is the round worth having, though at 200x to buy outright you will probably meet it the slow way.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Star ratings printed on every animal tell you what a hunt is worth before the shots are fired
  • Three bonus rounds that genuinely play differently, not three names for the same round
  • The Lion Bar in Roaring Reign turns dead low-pay symbols into progress
  • Five buy options spread from 2x to 200x, and the 2x one is the best RTP in the game at 96.35%

Cons

  • Line pays barely register: five Lions returns 25x, the same as five Wilds, against a 5,000x ceiling
  • 9 paylines, down from 17 in Great Game Rockies, on an identical max win
  • Khaki Quest costs 60x and runs at 96.10%, the only buy in the menu below the base RTP
  • Little to do between hunts apart from collecting small line wins

Is Great Game Serengeti Worth Playing?

6/10

Hacksaw builds these cleanly and Serengeti is no exception. The hunt reads instantly, the star system explains the stakes without a tutorial, and three bonus rounds with actual differences between them is more effort than most sequels bother with. The Lion Bar is the best thing in it.

What holds it back is how much rides on a single symbol arriving. Medium volatility keeps the waiting from getting punishing, and the coin ladder runs deep enough that a well-placed hunt lands somewhere respectable, but the top end only opens up when Wilds and Traps happen to fall on the same shot reels. It is due out on 10 September 2026, and it will probably land as a decent Hacksaw release that nobody is still talking about a month later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum win in Great Game Serengeti?

5,000x your bet, and it is reachable in every mode including the base game. It comes from Coins and Traps stacking up under Wild multipliers during a hunt, not from the paylines.

How do you trigger the free spins?

Land 3, 4 or 5 FS scatters on the same spin. Three awards 8 free spins of Khaki Quest, four awards 10 of Roaring Reign, and five unlocks the hidden Zebrawl round with 10 spins and a guaranteed Hunting Season symbol on each one.

What is the RTP of Great Game Serengeti?

96.29% on the top setting, which is what the demo runs. Hacksaw also supplies 94.21%, 92.30% and 86.24% versions for operators to pick from, so check the info panel wherever you play. The buy options range from 96.10% to 96.35%.

Can you buy the bonus in Great Game Serengeti?

Yes, five ways. Khaki Quest costs 60x and Roaring Reign 200x as direct buys, while BonusHunt (2x), Hunting Season (50x) and Big Five (100x) are FeatureSpins that keep charging every spin until you disable them. Zebrawl cannot be bought at all.

Is Great Game Serengeti suitable for under-18s?

No. It is a real-money slot and play is restricted to adults aged 18 or over, demo mode included. Set a budget before you start and treat the buy menu carefully, since a 200x purchase empties a small bankroll in one click.
