The Gold Symbol mechanic is what separates Mahjong Wins Bonus from the rest of the franchise. On every spin, random symbols on reels 2, 3, and 4 get marked in gold. Land a win that includes any of those gold symbols, and they transform into Wilds before the next tumble kicks in. It's a subtle twist, but it chains wins in ways the original Mahjong Wins couldn't.
Wilds only appear on the middle three reels, so you still need the outer reels to cooperate. Not every gold symbol converts either - only the ones involved in a winning combination. But when three or four golds light up on the same tumble? That's where the potential opens up.
Every win triggers a tumble. Winning symbols disappear, new ones drop in, and the multiplier goes up. In the base game, it climbs through x1, x2, x3, x5 - capping at 5x from the fourth tumble onward. Decent for a base game, nothing wild.
Free spins double the stakes. The multiplier sequence jumps to x2, x4, x6, x10. Four consecutive tumbles and you're at 10x for every remaining win in that sequence. Combined with Gold-to-Wild conversions, a single free spin can chain into 5+ tumbles at 10x. That's where the 5,000x max win actually feels reachable.
Three or more Scatters trigger 12 free spins. Land 3+ Scatters during the round and you get another 12. There's also a Buy Feature at 60x bet that jumps straight in, plus a separate Super Free Spins purchase option.
The free spin round is where Gold Symbols and the steeper multiplier ladder combine. You need both mechanics firing together - golds converting to Wilds, Wilds extending tumble chains, chains pushing the multiplier up. Without that chain reaction, individual free spins pay modestly.
Pragmatic clearly held back on this one. The later Mahjong Wins Super Scatter pushed the max win to 100,000x, which makes Bonus feel like a mid-franchise placeholder. At 5,000x with high volatility and 96.48% RTP, the math works fine for regular sessions - but big-win chasers will find the ceiling too low for the variance they're taking on.
The Mahjong Wins series now has six entries and counting. Bonus sits at number three, after the original and Mahjong Wins 2. It added the Gold Symbol mechanic that later entries built on, so it's historically interesting even if newer versions outperform it.
