Platooners uses a random trigger system called Action Spins. Three cartoon soldiers can appear on any base game spin, each modifying the reels differently. Rockets cover reels 1 and 3 with identical randomly-selected symbols, guaranteeing matches across the middle of the grid. Grenades drop up to 3 wild symbols on reels 3, 4, and 5. Bullets pick a random symbol from reel 1, then place one instance on every remaining reel, guaranteeing at least one 5-of-a-kind payline.
Bullets is the strongest. If the game selects a high-value symbol from reel 1, you get a guaranteed premium 5-of-a-kind. And if it picks the bonus scatter, you're straight into the bonus game. That randomness is the base game's entire appeal. Most spins play out as standard 178-payline fare. Then an Action Spin fires and the outcome jumps.
The bonus game is nothing like the base game. Three or more scatter symbols trigger Snakes of Fortune, an RPG-style battle across three difficulty levels. You start with 15 rounds and 1-3 Platooner attacks per round depending on trigger count.
Each round, your soldiers attack a snake. Normal coins take 3 damage to destroy and pay out cash. Mystery coins take 6 damage and contain one of four things: a big coin win, an extra attack activation (more soldiers per round), ammunition refills (more rounds), or a bomb that destroys everything until the next mystery coin.
Defeat a snake and you level up. Level 1 has low-medium value coins. Level 2 bumps to medium-high. Level 3 holds the real prizes. Weapons upgrade with each defeated snake, dealing more damage per attack. Leftover ammunition carries between levels, so efficient play on early snakes gives you more rounds at the top tier.
It's genuinely different from anything else in ELK's catalog. Most slot bonus rounds are free spins with multipliers. This one is a multi-stage resource management game where the path through the snake matters as much as the coin values you hit.
Platooners dates from 2018, before ELK introduced X-iter. No buy bonus option. The 96.3% RTP reflects that older era when ELK priced their games higher. The 2,500x max win caps the ceiling lower than modern ELK titles, but the RPG bonus creates a longer, more interactive peak experience than a standard free spins round. At 22% hit frequency, the base game sits in the middle range. Not as sparse as newer high-volatility ELK slots, not as generous as the 36% hit rate games.
