The whole game hangs on one symbol. A green four-leaf clover lands on the middle three reels only, and when it arrives it stretches to cover that reel completely, standing in for everything except the two stars. Spins resolve instantly and there is nothing to sit through, so sessions move quickly. Quickly enough that a hundred spins disappear before you have noticed spending them. Most pay nothing at all, and the ones that do land tend to return a fraction of the stake, a line of three lemons on a 40-cent bet giving back a dime. That drip is what high volatility looks like from the inside on a 40-line game: enough small change to keep the balance limping, never enough to move it.

The tension, such as it is, lives in the middle of the board. After a while you stop watching the outer reels and just look for green. When it turns up the whole screen goes to flames, and that jump from nothing to something is abrupt in a way most modern slots have designed out on purpose.

Where it falls short is ambition. Very Hot 20 and Very Hot 5 play more or less the same with fewer lines, and the Christmas edition adds decorations rather than anything you can actually play with. A festive slot with no festive feature, no gift picks, not even a seasonal wild, leaves the theme doing nothing but sitting there.
