That is the hook of Hacksaw's first proper Christmas slot: a 5x5 board, 19 fixed paylines, and one symbol doing nearly all the work.

Santa stands to the right of the grid with wire glasses low on his nose and both hands folded over his belt, less mascot than picture-book grandfather, swaying gently while the reels turn.

Low symbols are children's alphabet blocks, 10 through A in green, blue, red, pink and gold, which is a nicer solve than pasting royals onto a snowflake. Premiums are a candy cane tied with a green bow, a red stocking with a teal patch, a teddy bear with a purple patch on its head, a decorated tree topped with a gold star, and a pair of brass bells. The scatter is a snow globe with a pink FS floating inside. Nothing here takes a risk, and honestly nothing needs to: it looks like a good Christmas card, warm and slightly old-fashioned, and it holds that tone all the way through.

Sessions here split cleanly into waiting and watching. The blocks pay in small change and the premiums are packed so tightly together that a line of bells barely feels different from a line of stockings, so almost nothing in the base game reads as an event. Then a Santa lands, and for half a second the whole thing sharpens: does he drop, and what is underneath him.

That expansion condition puts a small sting in the design. Plenty of Santas land and just sit there, and a red gift box parked two rows down that nobody reaches is a specific kind of annoying. It gives the base game a rhythm of near-misses that the flat royals-and-baubles paytable could never produce on its own, which is probably the point.

The bonuses feel completely different from each other despite both handing you 10 spins. Night Before Xmas is a straight increase in traffic, over quickly, usually modest. The Santa Claus round is the one with a shape to it. Early activations snowball and the last few spins turn into a wall of Santas. Activate nothing for six or seven spins and you can watch the round die in front of you, which happens often enough to make the direct buy a nervy purchase at the price it asks.

At three out of five on the volatility meter it is a calmer game than most of what this studio puts out, and that cuts both ways. The dry patches are shorter. So are the peaks.

It works. The expanding Santa is a good mechanic, the gift multipliers give every drop a reason to hold your attention, and the reel-activation bonus is the best idea in the game by a distance. It also gives away exactly what it is on the first spin, which will not bother a player looking for a festive game to run in December and will bother anyone who already ground the original to death.

The bigger limitation is the calendar. A slot this committed to tinsel has a two-month window, and there is not enough underneath the theme to pull people back in April. For those two months, though, it does the job better than most of what it is competing with.
