ZapLab drops you into a 1900s mad scientist laboratory run by Dr. Mayhem - a villain who has created Zappy, an electric creature that now works against his maker. The 7x7 cluster grid needs 5 or more connected identical symbols to pay. Winning symbols explode, remaining ones fall, new ones drop from above. Standard avalanche cluster structure. What's different is what happens on top of it.
Zappy is a wild that doesn't disappear when it wins. It jumps to a new random position. Every time it's part of a winning cluster, it zaps all Dr. Mayhem blocker symbols off the grid - and each zap raises its own multiplier. On the final zap attack, Zappy can expand to 2x2, 3x3, or 4x4, covering a big chunk of the 7x7 board in connected wilds. The multiplier it's built up through the round applies to whatever that cluster pays.
Every symbol position inside every winning cluster adds one step to the Monster Meter. The meter has 25 steps. Fill it and you get a feature - either a Monster Feature or a Feature Symbol. Fill it 5 times in a single round and Shockwaves triggers: all 5 Monster Features activate in sequence. That's the closest thing this game has to a traditional free spins round.
The Monster Features are: Monster Reload (forces a new symbol drop at round end), Wild Flip (replaces every instance of one random symbol type on the grid with wilds), Monster Chunks (converts random symbols to 2x2 versions), Monstrous (expands one random symbol to 3x3, 4x4, or 5x5), and Zapocalypse (spawns Dr. Mayhem symbols onto the grid, which then triggers a Zappy zap sequence immediately). Zapocalypse is effectively a forced Zappy activation - Dr. Mayhem symbols appear specifically to be destroyed.
Feature Symbols (Omniblast, Electroshift, Twilight Twirl) form a second layer. They can drop in during any symbol drop or appear as Monster Meter rewards. Omniblast fires an X-shaped beam across the grid, replacing everything it hits with a random symbol. Electroshift upgrades all instances of one symbol type to the next tier up. Twilight Twirl removes all symbol types except one random survivor, then converts itself to that type. When they arrive as drop-ins, they also act as wilds.
Reactoonz is the obvious comparison point - monster characters, 7x7 cluster grid, avalanche mechanics. Reviewers noticed the resemblance. But the games pull in different directions. Reactoonz builds toward a Quantum Leap that transforms the grid wholesale. ZapLab builds toward Shockwaves through a structured meter - every cluster win is progress, not just luck waiting to trigger.
The hit frequency here is 26.1%, slightly above average for ELK cluster games. That makes the base game active. Max win is 10,000x - the same ceiling as Avalon X, less than Nightmaker, reasonable for the risk level.
Five X-iter modes: Shockwaves Hunt (3x bet, triple trigger chance, meter shortened to 20 steps), Zappy's Turf (5x bet, guaranteed Zappy appearance), Amplifier (25x bet, pending Monster Feature head start, meter only awards Monster Features), Shockwaves (100x bet, guaranteed full Shockwaves activation), Maxed Monster (500x bet, guaranteed Monstrous 5x5 drop on entry, meter heavily weighted toward Monstrous and Monster Chunks until Shockwaves triggers). RTP stays at 94% across all modes.
