A Book slot that traded the Egyptian tomb for the South African bush. Same format everyone already knows, except Gamzix hands the free spins two expanding symbols instead of the traditional one.

Five reels, three rows, ten fixed lines. A gold book with a lion's face on the cover is wild and scatter at once, and three of them anywhere pay a scatter award and open 10 free spins. The 2,500x ceiling is small for a 2024 release, though it fits a game with this little machinery, and 96.02% is a normal return.

One more toggle sits under the reels: Extra Bet, which forces a book onto every spin for 2.5 times the stake.

The whole thing sits under an African savanna sunset. Lavender-blue sky up top, amber haze along the horizon, acacia trees in silhouette. Two grey monkeys are parked in the branches directly above the reels, and past the frame there are zebras grazing along the bottom strip and a giraffe out on the plain. Nothing moves much back there, but it is a pleasant place to sit.

The reel frame is carved wood with totem panels down both sides and flower rosettes at the corners, and the reels themselves are parchment rather than a flat coloured panel. The premiums: an explorer in a pith helmet, young and bearded and grinning like he has just found the place; a purple ancestral mask mounted on an oval shield with crossed spears; a green ceremonial mask under a magenta feather headdress; and a drum bound in blue cloth. Royals are the usual A down to 10, though at least they have been carved into wooden letters with etched patterns, each in its own colour. The book is the best asset in the set, a gold lion's face on a blue cover with beaded tassels hanging off the spine.

The base game is thin. Ten lines on a 5x3 grid with no multipliers, no tumbles and nothing collecting in a corner means the reels either pay a few coins or they pay nothing, and long flat runs are the norm. That is the Book format working as designed, and anyone who has played one knows the rhythm: nothing much, then the moment a third book lands.

Volatility sits in the medium-high band, which in practice means the bonus turns up often enough to keep a session breathing but rarely delivers much when it does. Good rounds and wasted ones look identical for the first three spins, and that ambiguity is most of the tension the game has. Playing with Extra Bet on changes the shape of a session completely, closer to a fast arcade loop than a slot, because triggers stop being rare and become a question of how long you keep paying the premium (whether that trade is worth taking is a maths question the return figure quietly answers).

It probably won't hold anyone for a long stretch. But it is easy to sit with.

Book of Zulu is what it looks like: a Book clone with a better postcard behind the reels and one honest improvement to the bonus. The second expanding pick matters more than it sounds like it should, because it close to doubles the odds the round lands on a premium instead of a royal. That is the pitch, and it is a fair one.

Against it, a base game with nothing happening in it and a bonus that still needs the right pick to go anywhere. Gamzix does brighter, busier work elsewhere (Bonanza Donut has considerably more going on per spin), so this reads as a deliberate throwback. It does the format properly and stops there.
