Eggs drop onto the base reels one at a time with a cash figure printed across them, so a lot of spins go by watching two or three of them sit there while you wait on a fourth. Four is the gate. Once it opens the eggs lock where they are, the reels keep turning for eggs only, and each new one buys a bit more time.

Low pays are 9 through Ace, at least carved as chunky painted wood rather than flat letters. The wild is a rooster standing on a signboard, and it's the only symbol with any real personality to it.

Long dry stretches. The base reels run on card symbols, and the animal pays are small enough that five of the best of them still returns under eight times the stake, so the grid mostly exists to deliver eggs and barns rather than to pay anything itself.

What keeps you watching is that the eggs announce themselves. The value sits there in plain numbers on the reel while the count climbs to two, then three, and you know precisely what you're one symbol short of collecting. Most of the time it stops at three. That gap between seeing a good number parked on the reels and actually banking it is where the game does its work, and it's a cheap trick that has kept hold-and-win slots in business for a decade.
