Lately, BGaming has been on a hot streak with some heavy-hitting slots. Games like Wincent Wolf and Bonanza Billion Merge Up have been dropping with great RTPs (97%+) and win ceilings up to 15,000x your stake.

So, when I saw they dropped Cats Love Yummy, I was excited. But after putting it through its paces, I have to warn you: this game is a real step backward. It's basically designed to slowly drain your balance while distracting you with cute graphics.

Cats Love Yummy base game board with a stacked wild on reel four, a winning payline, and the Cats Jackpot tile lit in the sixth reel's centre cell
The jackpot tile is sitting right there in the lit centre cell, there's a stack of wilds on reel four, and the whole board still hands back 0.80. That's the game in one picture.

The Vibe vs. The Reality

Visually, the game is great. It's set in a cozy cat café, the cats look awesome, and they replaced the boring card symbols with yarn and feather toys. It's a super chill, low-stakes environment.

But don't let the cozy vibe fool you. The math underneath is brutal. It's a medium-high volatility slot, but the max win is capped at a really disappointing 1,500x your stake. The base payouts are so low they're almost insulting, a full line of the top-paying cat symbol only gives you about 6x your total bet.

Cats Love Yummy paying 0.20 for three feather-wand toy symbols across the first three reels at a 1.20 total bet
Three feather toys on the first three reels, and that's 0.20 back off a 1.20 spin. This exact payout came up more often than any other winning result I got.

How the Game Actively Punishes You

The layout is a standard 5x3 grid, but there's a 6th reel on the right that only spins a "Cats Jackpot" tile. To actually win anything decent, you need to hit a 5-of-a-kind on the main board and land the jackpot tile in the middle of that 6th reel on the exact same spin.

But here is the bit that is printed in the paytable and that nobody reads: the game actively punishes you for using Wilds.

If you hit a pure 5-of-a-kind line of cats, you win the Grand jackpot (about 333x). But if a Wild steps in to help finish that exact same line? The payout crashes down to the Minor jackpot, a measly 33x. Pure toys get you 83x, but if a Wild is involved, it drops to 17x. The Wild still helps you finish the line. It just costs you nine tenths of the jackpot sitting behind it.

Cats Love Yummy with the Cats Jackpot tile on the sixth reel's bottom cell while the lit centre cell holds an ordinary cat, so no jackpot is armed
Here's the trap in miniature. The tile did turn up on the sixth reel, just one row too low, and the lit centre cell got an ordinary cat instead. Nothing was armed, and nothing could have been.

The Free Spins Lock You Out of the Top Two Jackpots

This brings me to the most frustrating part of the game. You trigger Free Spins by landing three paw scatters.

During the free spins, the 5th reel becomes entirely covered in Wilds. Sounds awesome, right? Think again. Because the 5th reel is always Wild, it is impossible to ever land a "pure" 5-of-a-kind without a Wild in it.

That means the top two jackpots are off the table for the whole bonus round. The game is not hiding it either - the Grand and Major panels disappear from above the reels the moment the feature starts, and the rules say so in as many words.

The feature that is supposed to give you the biggest wins is literally engineered to ensure you can never hit the top prizes. And the craziest part? The game lets you buy this bonus feature for 100x your stake. Why on earth would you pay 100x to buy a feature where the best prizes have been disabled? I bought it once, got a bunch of dead spins, and walked away with 21x my bet.

I'll give the developers this: the tease is clever. The jackpot tile lands in the middle row about half the time, so you always feel like you are just about to hit it. That is the whole trick.

But ultimately, this game is a trap. If you want a cat-themed slot with more room at the top, Onca Mania stops at 5,000x rather than 1,500x. If you want a good BGaming slot with this exact layout, go play Wincent Wolf. Just skip Cats Love Yummy, and whatever you do, do not pay for that 100x bonus buy.

Cats Love Yummy free spins with reels four and five entirely wild and only the Minor and Mini jackpot panels remaining above the reels
Reels four and five come up solid wild, which looks like the best board of the night until you read the strip above them. Grand and Major have simply left. Minor and Mini are all that's still on offer.
