Released in September 2026, Hot Potato: Battleground pairs a quirky military-potato theme with a very familiar mechanic. If you've spent any time playing Pragmatic Play's Sugar Rush, you'll instantly recognize the engine here: it's built entirely around a persistent multiplier grid.

Hot Potato: Battleground 7x7 board during the free spins, the grid covered in red and yellow multiplier cells from x2 to x128 under chef potatoes, sandwiches and chips
This is what the bonus remembers: every cell a wild blew up earlier in the round is still marked, right up to x128, waiting for a cluster to land on top.

How the Gameplay and Betting Work

To get into the main feature, you need to land three scatters, which awards eight free spins. If you don't want to wait, you can buy the bonus outright for 100x your bet.

Thunderkick has also included five different side-bet options to change up the pace. You can pay 1.7x your bet per spin to make the bonus four times more likely to trigger naturally, or go all the way up to the "Bonus Boost Extreme" mode for 10x your bet. The Extreme mode is actually pretty clever: it triggers the bonus roughly once every ten spins. Since ten spins at 10x costs the same as the 100x direct buy, you're basically paying the same price but getting a handful of base game spins thrown in along the way.

Five modes, each priced per spin. Extreme at 10x promises a bonus roughly every ten spins, which works out to the same 100x the buy charges.

The Multiplier Grid in Action

The game is all about building up multipliers on the grid. Whenever a winning cluster clears, it leaves a wild behind. When that wild explodes, it stamps a x2 multiplier onto every cell in its blast. If it happens again on the same spot, the multiplier doubles, all the way up to x128. If a new winning cluster lands on top of those marked cells, your payout gets multiplied by their combined total.

In the base game, the board wipes clean after every spin. But in the free spins bonus, those multiplier cells stick around for the whole feature.

A chocolate cluster worth next to nothing on the paytable, multiplied by the x32 the cells under it add up to. The cheap symbol on a hot spot is how this game pays.

My Experience: High Volatility on Display

I bought the 100x bonus, and my result, winning back about half of what I paid, was a perfect example of how this kind of game cuts both ways.

For the first four free spins, I didn't hit a single winning cluster. No wins meant no exploding wilds, so the grid stayed completely blank. Things finally clicked on spin five when a chain reaction went off, doubling a bunch of cells in the bottom left corner. A high-paying cluster landed on a x24 multiplier, giving me a nice 42x payout. The next spin added a little more to the pot, but my final two spins were completely dead, even though I had three massive x128 cells just sitting there waiting. It's a harsh but fair reminder: a persistent grid is only valuable if the right symbols actually land on it.

No cluster means no wild, and no wild means no cells. Early in the bonus the grid can sit completely blank like this, with nothing to carry forward.

How It Compares to the Competition

Thunderkick's 2023 Hot Potato also had exploding wilds and a multiplier grid, and one reviewer says it had the same 10,000x max win. It's unique within Thunderkick's own lineup, as it's their only cluster game played on a 7x7 board where the multipliers live on the grid itself rather than on the wilds.

However, the obvious comparison is Sugar Rush, the 2022 game whose doubling-cell format this one follows cell for cell, and Dulzura Tricolor runs the same doubling too.

What really separates Hot Potato: Battleground from those games is the math, and this is where players will have to make a choice. Sugar Rush offers a standard 96.50% RTP (Return to Player) with a 5,000x max win. Thunderkick has doubled the max win here to an impressive 10,000x, which is great for jackpot chasers. But you pay a steep price for that potential: the base RTP is a noticeably low 94.23%.

If you love the Sugar Rush mechanic but are looking for a higher maximum payout and a fun, quirky theme, Hot Potato: Battleground is definitely worth a few spins. Just keep in mind that every rival named above offers a better overall return to player, so you'll need to brace yourself for some highly volatile swings.

The 10,000x top prize is the game's answer to Sugar Rush: twice the max win, paid for with a lower return.
