Microgaming went all-in on their new "Link & Merge" mechanic back in April 2026. They actually dropped two games on the exact same day, this one and Almighty Zeus, and then basically copy-pasted this exact game a few months later as Mahjong Wilds Link & Merge. Clearly, the studio thinks they've struck gold with this framework. But is it actually fun to play?

Here's the honest breakdown.

Lucky Twins Wilds Link & Merge 6x6 grid with a seven-Queen cluster lit up and paying 0.20, three Fortune Cats on the left and two children on the right
Seven Queens touching is a win here, and it's worth all of 0.20 on a 1.00 bet. That's the base game in one picture.

The Vibe

Lucky Twins Wilds Link & Merge (say that five times fast) leans hard into a classic Chinese New Year theme. It's exactly what you'd expect: a dark green grid wrapped in heavy red and gold, packed with Fortune Cats, firecrackers, and gold coins. You've got a couple of cute kids cheering you on to the right, and three plump Fortune Cats sitting on cushions to the left, just waiting to eat your scatters and hopefully trigger a bonus.

The three cats aren't just decoration. Each one soaks up its own scatters, and a fully upgraded cat is what kicks off Link & Merge.

The Stats & The Grind

Let's get the math out of the way. This is a highly volatile slot with a max win of 10,000x your bet. Stakes range from a casual 0.10 up to 25. The RTP is decent at 96.16%, but a quick warning: casinos can run it as low as 93%, and the game itself doesn't print its RTP anywhere.

The base game is a 6x6 cluster-pays grid. Five matching, touching symbols give you a win, they explode, and new ones drop in. Classic cascade stuff. But honestly? The base game can be a massive grind. You're mostly getting tiny, fractional payouts unless you hit a massive cluster (15 Fortune Cats pays 500x, but good luck with that).

There's a meter above the board that fills as symbols explode. Hitting 15, 30, and 45 symbols drops random wilds to keep your streak alive. Hit 60, and you get 10 free spins. Sounds great, right? Except the meter resets every single spin. I played over 200 base spins and never hit the 60 mark organically. I got the meter to 43 twice, but triggering the free spins naturally is tough.

Base game board with no cluster of five, Buy Feature from 40.00 and Buy All Features 150.00 panels beside the reels
Plenty of symbols, no five of a kind touching, so nothing pays. You'll see a lot of boards like this one.

The Free Spins (A Bit of a Letdown)

Since hitting them naturally is a chore, you can just buy the free spins for 40x your bet. Honestly? It didn't earn its price back for me.

They give you a multiplier trail that climbs up to 10x with every cascade, but it resets back to 1x between every single spin. If you only get one winning cluster on a spin, you get no multiplier. I bought a round and it gave me back a measly 37x my bet. About a third of that came from the very first spin, which climbed to 4x and paid 12x; three spins paid nothing and the rest were small change.

Free spin with the Multiplier Trail lit at 5x and a spin total of 1.60, six free spins left
The trail got all the way to 5x on this spin and it still only paid 1.60, because the clusters it multiplied were tiny.

The Main Event: Link & Merge

So, why play this? The "Link & Merge" feature. This is where the game actually shines, and it's triggered either by feeding scatters to the cats or buying it directly (50x for random modifiers, or 150x to guarantee all three).

The game shifts to a blank 36-cell board where coins with values up to 100x stick to the grid. It's a standard 3-spin "Hold and Win" game, BUT with a twist that fixes my biggest pet peeve with these slots: gridlock. When 5 or more coins touch, they squish together into one giant coin holding their total value. This clears up board space so you can keep dropping more coins.

If you have the modifiers active, things get crazy:

  • Spread: Copies your big merged coin into empty spots.
  • Multiply: Leaves a multiplier behind that can grow up to x1024 if you keep merging coins over it.
  • Jackpot: Climbs a ladder based on how many coins you merge. Merge 50 coins total, and you hit the 5,000x Grand Jackpot.

I see why Microgaming is pushing this mechanic. The base game is basically just a place to feed the cats, and the free spins feel way too restricted by that resetting multiplier.

But that coin board? It's genuinely brilliant. Watching the coins fold into each other to free up space makes the Hold & Win feature feel fresh, because the board keeps making room instead of locking up. The Link & Merge feature is the whole reason this game exists. It just takes its time to drop: the cats fired it twice in over 200 base spins.

Link & Merge coin board with merged 16.30 and 32.60 coins, x2 and x4 multiplier cells and the Minor jackpot lit
Merged coins free up cells, and with Multiply on the x2 spots upgrade to x4 as new links form over them. The Minor lit up here, and the Grand still needed 29 more coins.
