If you're a fan of seasonal slots, Playtech's The Racaroon Halloween is a fun, spooky-season addition that puts our favorite trash panda right in the middle of a Halloween sweet shop. It's a great-looking game, but if the gameplay feels a little too familiar, you aren't crazy. Underneath the festive coat of paint, it shares its board, its bonus rules and its buy prices with Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks.

How the Respins Work
The main event here is the hold-and-win style bonus. To trigger it, you need to land a Bonus symbol at the exact same time the Raccoon Wild hits the "Hot Zone" in the middle reel. When that happens, the raccoon locks into place, the rest of the board clears out, and you're left with 14 empty spots.
From there, the Racaroon Respins start with three respins. Only cash coins and "1 UP" symbols drop, and anytime one lands, your spin counter resets to three. What makes this feature exciting is the multiplier: every coin is multiplied by your active multiplier the second it lands, and those "1 UP" symbols increase your multiplier up to a maximum of 10x. If you manage to fill all 14 spots, you get the 5,000x GRAND on top of your coin values.

Bonus Buys and Quirky Math
If you're playing somewhere that allows the Buy Feature, the game gives you a menu of 10 different starting multipliers to choose from. The cheapest option guarantees a 1x multiplier for 20x your bet, while the top tier costs 122.5x your bet for a 10x start.
I actually tried the top-tier 10x buy for 122.5x my bet. Over about 18 respins, I landed ten coins. Because I started at 10x, they paid out nicely, though I didn't see a single 1 UP symbol to push things further. I ended up making back just under what I paid for the feature, 120x against the 122.5x price.
One thing I noticed is that buying the bonus didn't touch my base game progress. My base game multiplier was sitting at 2x before I bought the feature, and it was right there waiting for me when the bonus ended.
A quick tip for the stats nerds: The math on the bonus buys is a little weird. The 8x buy actually gives you the best Return to Player (RTP) at 95.01%, which is higher than the base game's 94.86%. Strangely, the cheapest 1x buy gives you the worst odds at 94.12%.

How It Compares to the Series and the Wolf
This is the third game in the Racaroon series, but it feels more like a lateral move than a true sequel. The Racaroon 2 really mixed things up with a bigger grid and a totally new multiplier system. This one goes back to the original layout, but drops the RTP slightly (from 95.83% down to 94.86%), and its 5,529x max win comes through the 9x buy, while the standard bet's simulated top is 5,192.5x against the original's 5,235x.
The most obvious comparison, though, is Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks. They share the same one-cell wild, the same bonus rules and the same 20x to 122.5x buy range. The only real differences are the theme and the math. The farmyard version has a better RTP (95.83%), and its max win is an even 5,000x.
The Racaroon Halloween is a solid game, mostly because the mechanics it shares with High Steaks were already great. The hold-and-win feature is exciting, and the 1 UP multiplier system keeps you watching every respin.
That being said, if you're a strict strategy player who cares mostly about RTP, it's hard to justify playing this over Big Bad Wolf: High Steaks, which gives you a full percentage point more in return for the exact same gameplay. But, if you're a sucker for a Halloween theme, or you just want to chase that slightly higher max win, it's definitely worth a few spins this October.
