Released in August 2026, Backseat Gaming's Toad Town brings a pretty fun, quirky premise to the table: a Western standoff set right in the middle of a swamp. If you're a regular slot player, you'll probably notice right away how much it has in common with Pragmatic Play's Zeus vs Hades - Gods of War, relying heavily on expanding multiplier wilds. But despite the obvious similarities, it brings its own distinct flavor to the grid.

Toad Town special spin in The Swamp Showdown: two VS Wild Reels with 5x and 4x multipliers on reels 2 and 3 of the 5x5 swamp board, toads on reel 1
Wild reels on reels 2 and 3 are the sweet spot: every line runs through both, so any paying symbol on reel 1 turns into three of a kind, and the two multipliers add up on top.

The Setup and Base Game

On the math side, the game holds a steady 96.01% RTP across the board, whether you're spinning the base game or using the buy features. You've got a few ways to tailor your playstyle: Bonus Boost, a 2x ante bet to boost your chances of spinning into a bonus naturally, and Lasso Spins, a 60x feature spin that guarantees at least two expanding wilds per spin.

The core mechanics revolve around "VS" symbols that expand into full wild reels with multipliers up to 200x, alongside "X" symbols that multiply any VS reels currently on the board.

Two of these you switch on and pay for every spin, the other two you buy once. Bonus Boost costs 2x a spin, Lasso Spins 60x, and the bonuses go for 200x and 400x.

The Bonuses: High Risk, High Reward

The main draw here is the two tiers of free spins, triggered by landing three or four bonus symbols.

Toad Trouble free spin with two VS Wild Reels, 7x on reel 1 and 5x on reel 4, and a line of jacks marked with the combined multiplier
Two wild reels in Toad Trouble, and their multipliers add rather than multiply. The one on reel 4 only counts because the symbols on reels 2 and 3 happened to line up between them.

The entry-level bonus, Toad Trouble, will set you back 200x your stake for 10 free spins. It boosts the frequency of the wild reels, but keep in mind that multipliers don't stick between spins and the round can't retrigger. I gave this a session, and it was pretty brutal: I won back about a tenth of my buy-in. I had one decent spin where wild reels landed on reels 1 and 4 for a combined 12x multiplier (paying 18x), but the rest of the round was dead. Because it's a traditional left-to-right payline game, if those wilds land on the later reels without matching symbols connecting them from the first reel, they don't do you much good.

If you're feeling adventurous, the Swamp Showdown super bonus costs 400x. This is where the game gets a lot more interesting. It adds a collection meter above the board. For every three bonus symbols you collect, you get three extra spins plus one "special spin." This special spin is the real draw: it guarantees between two and five wild reels depending on how high you've climbed the ladder. The multipliers still reset per spin, but your collection progress persists.

The Swamp Showdown level-up card reading +3 FS and 2+ VS/X reels guaranteed, with the Bonus collection ladder above the reels
Three Bonus symbols fill the first rung of the ladder: three more free spins and a special spin that has to land at least two wild reels. Higher rungs raise that guarantee.

My experience with this premium tier was much better. I walked away with a profit of nearly 24% (about 1.2x my buy-in), and it was almost entirely thanks to one massive level-up spin. The game dropped wild reels on columns 2 and 3, connecting perfectly with reel 1 to create three-of-a-kind wins across all 15 paylines for a sweet 490.5x payout in a single drop. It really shows the game's potential when things line up.

How It Compares

Looking at the bigger picture, Toad Town (with its 12,500x max win) came out a few weeks before a run of Backseat Gaming releases that share a lot of its parts. Moon Dynasty has the same 5x5 grid but a 10,000x cap, and Strawberry Land runs a similar Bonus ladder on a 6x4 board, handing out sticky wilds instead of a special spin. Hades Domain climbs a Bonus ladder too, only on a scatter-pays grid and with a higher 15,000x max win.

Outside of Backseat's portfolio, the comparisons write themselves. Hacksaw's Duel at Dawn plays in a very similar 5x5 sandbox, though with a slightly better RTP (96.30%). But as mentioned earlier, Pragmatic's Zeus vs Hades is the closest match on mechanics. They share the exact same 5x5, left-to-right structure with adding multipliers. The biggest difference? Zeus vs Hades locks its wild reels in place for the whole bonus rather than resetting them every spin, and edges Toad Town out slightly with a 15,000x max win and a 96.07% RTP.

Toad Town is a solid, highly volatile slot. It can be incredibly stingy if the wilds land awkwardly, but the Swamp Showdown bonus proves it has the firepower to deliver exciting, big hits if you catch a lucky break.
