Gold Megaways is a glitzy game-show throwback where the reels themselves keep growing. It's Big Time Gaming's 10th-anniversary redo of the very first slot they ever built, and this time the free spins can stretch the ways count from a wheel-picked starting number all the way up to a colossal 1,000,000.

The base game is a full six-reel Megaways with reacting wins, topping out at 117,649 ways. Land three or more Scatters and the real game opens up. But you don't even need the Scatters here: the Win Exchange lets you trade or gamble a decent base win straight into the bonus, which is a clever bit of player agency you rarely see.

The stage is a deep-red velvet curtain that shimmers with falling gold coins and little golden sparks, and the logo sits in a purple-rimmed oval framed by two columns of round marquee bulbs, the kind you'd find around a theatre sign or an 80s TV game-show set. Retro showbiz, basically. The gold-and-purple menu panels and chunky gold-edged buttons carry the same Vegas-glitz styling right through the interface.

It's clean and well put together. Honestly, though, the gold-and-glamour dressing is about as generic as slot themes get, and plenty of games wear this exact costume. The anniversary angle at least gives it a reason to exist, and knowing it's a nod to BTG's origin story makes it land a little warmer, but nothing here will surprise you visually.

This is a big-or-bust game and it doesn't pretend otherwise. The base six reels can go cold for long stretches, and the Win Exchange, handy as it is, only shows up once you've already caught a decent hit. Almost all the money lives in the free spins, and specifically in whether the reels grow tall enough to start minting x3 Wilds. Get a couple of reels to ten symbols with wilds stacking and the maths runs away from you fast. Fall short and the bonus just fizzles.

The wheel spin at the start of each free spins round is a nice hit of tension, since a high starting number gives the whole thing a head start. It won't click for everyone. If you like a steady drip of small wins this'll probably feel too swingy, and the dead runs between features can drag.

Gold Megaways earns its keep on mechanics rather than looks. The Extending Reels are a properly different idea, the wheel opener and Win Exchange add decisions most Megaways slots don't bother with, and the fixed 96.42% RTP is a real upgrade on the old 20-line Gold. What holds it back is the payoff. A 20,200x ceiling is modest once you've been sold on a 1,000,000-ways bonus, and six years on the presentation shows its age. The ideas still hold up well; the top prize just never quite matches the ambition of the engine underneath.
