Hot Volcano Series
Hot Volcano Slot Overview
Picture an old arcade fruit machine dragged to the edge of a lava flow. Three reels, five fixed paylines, kiwis and bananas wrapped in flame. What makes Hot Volcano odd is that most of the grid keeps vanishing: five symbols drop onto every reel, but two or three of them land Empty, so the machine redraws its own playing area on every spin.
The rest is deliberately plain. Three-of-a-kind combinations only, one bonus, and a HOT wild worth 500x a line for a full set, which on a five-line stake is 100 times what the spin cost. Free spins open when three Free Spins symbols land on winning lines, and they pay 7x the total bet before a single free round has spun.
This is also where a template started. Three and a half years later Evoplay shipped Fogo Do Brasil 777, then Hot Rio Samba, both running numbers identical to this one down to the 96.01% RTP, the 17% hit rate, the 500x wild and the 3,078x ceiling. Only the fruit changes. Recycling a maths model is ordinary practice in this business, but a player deserves to know that Hot Volcano came first and the other two are the same game in different costumes.
Theme & Design
The whole game is staged as a physical cabinet parked inside a volcano. A red neon frame wraps the three tall reels, a dot-matrix marquee spells LET'S PLAY in yellow bulbs across the top, and a row of chunky orange and red buttons sits under the glass doing absolutely nothing. Behind it the room goes almost black, with molten seams running down a rock face on the right and thin cracks of lava glowing between each reel.
Symbols are clean cartoon work. Kiwi halves cut to show the seeds, curved bananas, spiky pineapples, all red-outlined so they read against the dark reel strips. The fire versions are the same fruit with a flame curling up one side and a hotter internal glow. The HOT wild is a bundle of all three fruits burning behind a red ribbon banner, and the Free Spins symbol is chunky green retro lettering floating on a pool of orange lava.
One consequence of the Empty mechanic is worth flagging: the reels look sparse. A lot of the time two fruits sit in a column of darkness, and symbols get sliced in half by the top and bottom of the frame, which looks less like a design choice than a fit problem. Handsome game, slightly awkward-looking grid.

Features & How They Work
Empty Symbols
Five symbols land on every reel and two or three of them come up Empty, alternating with the regular ones through the strip. Empties pay nothing and nothing substitutes for them. Only regular symbols sitting on the five fixed paylines count toward a combination, so a nominally fifteen-position grid plays like a compact classic machine that changes shape every spin. Sometimes two full-size fruits are visible on a reel, sometimes one full-size and two half-hidden. It is the single idea holding the game up, and it does the job.
HOT Wild
The HOT bundle substitutes for everything except the Free Spins symbol, and it is also the top payer by a wide margin. Three of them on a line pays 500x, ten times the best regular symbol and a hundred times the total five-line stake. Everything the 3,078x maximum is built on runs through this symbol.
Fruits on Fire
Every fruit has a burning twin, and the burning one pays far more: 50x for three Pineapples on Fire against 6x for three plain ones. Fire fruits also cover for their own plain version, and the traffic runs one way only. A Banana on Fire fills in for a regular Banana, never the reverse.
What settles the payout is which version actually filled the line. Two Bananas on Fire plus one plain Banana pays as a plain Banana combination, not a fire one. Two different fire fruits plus a plain third fruit also drops to the cheap rate. So the fire symbols buy coverage, they make more lines land, and then they hand you the bottom of the paytable for it. Three matching fire fruits is the only route to a fire-rate win.
Free Spins
Three Free Spins symbols have to land on winning lines, not simply anywhere on the reels, which makes this a stiffer ask than a normal scatter trigger. The trigger itself pays a guaranteed 7x the total bet before the round begins. Ten spins then run at the triggering stake with every win tripled. The Free Spins symbol appears in the main game only, so there is no retrigger and ten rounds is the whole allowance.

How Hot Volcano Plays
Flat, then briefly loud. Roughly one spin in six pays anything, and across five lines with three-of-a-kind wins only, the dead runs pile up faster than a 17% hit rate sounds like it should allow. Plenty of the spins that do register barely count either. A bottom-tier combination returns 1x or 3x the line bet, which against a five-line stake is a fifth or three fifths of what the spin cost. A hit that leaves the balance lower is still a hit as far as the counter is concerned.
What holds attention is the blanking. You are never watching a full grid resolve, just three thin columns with holes punched through them, and a payline either has three live symbols on it or it has a gap. That reads cleaner than most classic slots manage, and it takes the edge off the dry patches for a while. Only for a while, though. With one feature and no retrigger, long sessions here get repetitive, and the game asks for patience it does not always repay.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Empty symbols reshape the grid every spin and give a five-line classic something to watch
- 3,078x is a big ceiling for a three-reeler this simple
- Free spins pay 7x the total bet before the ten rounds even start
- Fire fruits widen the number of lines that connect
Cons
- A 17% hit rate over five lines means long flat stretches
- The bottom three tiers pay back less than the spin cost
- One feature, no retrigger, no buy and no ante in this edition
- The same maths model has since been shipped twice more under different fruit
Is Hot Volcano Worth Playing?
For a three-reel fruit machine, this one earns its keep on a single idea. The Empty symbols make the grid feel unstable in a way a straight classic never does, and 3,078x is unusually high for something this stripped back, even if getting near it means stacking 500x wild lines under the x3 in a bonus that does not come around often. Medium-high volatility is not marketing here. It bites.
The limits are just as visible: one feature, ten free spins with no way to extend them, and a paytable whose lower half quietly costs you money. Hot Volcano probably plays best in short sittings at a small stake, where the flat runs cost little and the bonus still means something. Evoplay liked this model enough to build it twice more, and three years on, the original is still the one with the best-looking cabinet.
