King of the Barrels Slot Review

Logic Labs and Playtech made a game where the regular symbols feel completely useless. King of the Barrels is a 5x3 jungle game with 243 ways, but you quickly realize the standard paytable is awful. The best five-of-a-kind hit is a pink gem, and it is only worth three times your bet. Everything you actually want comes from barrels and coins, and a crowned purple gorilla on the middle reel is the only way to collect them.

Barrels land on reels 2 and 4 with cash values printed on them, while coins land on reels 1 and 5. If the gorilla does not show up on reel 3, those cash symbols just fly off the screen and pay nothing. When the ape does land, it grabs every barrel and coin value in sight, which creates a weird rhythm. You can see massive cash values on the grid but win zero, then suddenly score a decent payout from an almost empty screen.

The regular ways wins are mostly a distraction. Barrel values range from 1x up to 15x your bet, while coins go up to 18x. We did manage one decent base game hit when pink gems landed on four reels with the gorilla filling in the fifth, twelve different ways at once, paying 36x our stake. Most of the time, the regular symbols just clog up the screen while you wait for the gorilla to do the heavy lifting.

You get into the free games when barrels land on both sides of a gorilla. The game gives you three spins, but any new barrel or gorilla resets the count back to three. The gorillas stay stuck in place for the whole round, and every new one that lands keeps collecting. It sounds great, but our round ended at just 46.00 from a 5.00 stake, which is a weak 9.2x return.

We got the default wooden version of the bonus, which blacks out the outer reels and traps you in a tiny 3x3 box. The better version needs gold barrels to trigger, opening up the full 5x3 grid. That gold version is also the only place you can land the 1000x GRAND prize during the feature.

There is also a coin wheel above the reels that spins for cash prizes or fixed jackpots. You need two coins and a gorilla to even have a shot at the MINI, MINOR, MAJOR, or GRAND prizes. A one-coin trigger just plays for standard cash values between 1x and 18x.

Since the base game is such a grind, the game offers two toggle switches instead of a bonus buy. EXTRA BET doubles your stake to make every barrel gold, which is the only way to reach the 5x3 bonus board and the GRAND. GO BANANAS strips the regular symbols off the reels to at least double your feature chances, leaving barrels, coins, gorillas and empty space, and it costs nothing: across about 40 spins with it on, a 5.00 bet took exactly 5.00 off the balance every time.

You cannot run both. Turning Go Bananas on switches Extra Bet off, so the choice is twice as many triggers or gold barrels on the ones you get, never the two together. That is the most interesting decision the game asks you to make, and it is buried in a help file.

The return is 95.89% on a standard spin, and neither toggle really moves it: 95.90% with Extra Bet, 95.92% with Go Bananas. The ceiling is 4,030x your stake, capped at 2,000,000 in cash, and the game puts your odds of touching it at one in a billion. That is the honest summary of the GRAND chase.

The collect mechanic is fast and the cartoon Aztec art is genuinely fun to look at, but the game is frustrating to play at the normal stake. The regular symbols are dead weight, and the biggest prizes are locked behind gold barrels that barely appear unless you pay double to force them. It is only really worth playing if you are willing to run EXTRA BET permanently to actually chase the 1000x GRAND, because the standard setup feels like you are missing out on the real game.
