A stepped pyramid in the haze, a scarlet macaw on the branch beside the reels, queens in feathered headdresses. This is the Mayan jungle played straight, and the thing worth waiting for is a gold sun disc that opens the free spins.

Everything around that disc is deliberately old. Five reels, three rows, 30 lines that never change, one green START button, a red-or-black gamble sitting under every win. The return is 96.48%, better than most machines built this way. Above the reels a meter cycles through three mystery progressives, Gold, Diamond and Platinum, which drop at a hidden point rather than off any combination you can see coming.

The one concession to the last decade is a Buy Bonus button.

The reel set is a slab of carved stone streaked with moss, a chunky 30 chiselled into plaques on both sides, and the jungle behind it is painted rather than rendered: pyramid on the left, canopy and blue sky above, the macaw perched at the right edge close enough to count its feathers. The queens carry the art. One wears a fan of magenta plumes and gold hoop earrings the size of her jaw, another has orange dreadlocks strung with beads and blue paint across her cheekbones, a third sits inside green quetzal feathers with a red mask painted round her eyes. Each gets her own coloured tile, which stops four similar portraits blurring into one another on a busy grid. The panther is the weak link, a flat black head floating in a turquoise medallion, though it reads fast, and on a 30-line grid that counts for more than personality. A, K and J are cut into stone and inked with glyphs in blue, red and green. Little of it moves. The jade mask flares gold when it lands in a winning line and that is close to the whole of the showmanship.

Cheap and slow, the way old line slots are. Minimum spin is 0.30 across all 30 lines and the wins that come back most often are two royals and a wild for a few cents, which keeps the balance moving without ever moving it upward. Sessions settle into a rhythm fast. Discs are the only thing to watch for.

When they start stacking on a reel the game does the one piece of theatre it has, and you spend the next second staring at the reel to its right. That is where the tension sits, and there isn't much of it elsewhere, because nothing accumulates between spins: no meter filling, no symbols collecting, no ladder climbing. Then there are the jackpot counters, doing the psychological work they always do in a machine like this (you know the drop is random, you watch the number anyway).

The gamble shifts the pace more than you'd expect. A 0.20 win is nothing on its own, so doubling it twice for the sake of it is where the game gets a little bite back.

Fazi built this for the cabinet crowd and it plays like it: one button, one feature, jackpot meters ticking overhead. The art is the strongest thing here, the queens especially, and 96.48% with three progressives underneath is fair treatment for a 0.30 stake. What you get for that money is thin, though. Thirty fixed lines, a wild with no tricks, and a bonus most players will buy because waiting on it is dull.

The plainness isn't entirely a fault. It makes the machine easy to read and easy to sit with for an hour. It also means the interesting minute of any session is the one spent inside the free spins, and everything before it is just paying for the ticket.
