Mine Defender is not a slot in the traditional sense. There are no spinning reels, no paylines, no tumbling clusters. The 5x6 grid fills with symbols from above on each round - and some of those symbols are enemies. When enemies enter the grid, the hero at the bottom of the screen opens fire.
Wins come from scatter pays: 7 or more identical symbols anywhere on the grid. The minimum threshold is high compared to other scatter games - 7 connected or scattered symbols, whichever forms the largest same-type group, is what it takes. Winning symbols are removed, remaining ones fall, and new symbols drop in, continuing until no new wins form. That's the base structure. On top of it sits an entirely separate battle system.
Each round begins with a fresh symbol set and a hero with 1 life and 1 shot. If enemies appear in the grid, the Hero Drop sequence triggers. The hero fires at enemies on the row closest to them. Defeated enemies are replaced by feature or payout symbols. Wins are evaluated, winning symbols removed, and surviving enemies advance one row toward the hero. Enemies reaching the bottom row attack - each one costs the hero one life. Zero lives means the round ends immediately.
Collectible symbols modify the battle. Shot ammo (N) gives the hero an additional shot, up to 3 per firing round. Spread Shot (S) upgrades the shot to 3 projectiles at once. Life (H) restores one lost life. Multiplier (M) adds its value to the global multiplier, which applies to all scatter wins and coin pays. Coin (C) delivers an instant payout at its displayed value multiplied by the current global multiplier. Mystery Boxes reveal a feature weapon, enemy, or wild.
Feature weapons include Airstrike (3 damage to 1-6 random enemy positions), Laser (clears a full column of normal enemies, 3 damage to bosses), and Pushback (shoves all enemies one step back - off the grid entirely for standard enemies). Wilds substitute for any payout symbol.
The Mini Boss is a 2x2 enemy with 10 life. It carries a Trophy Coin; defeating it pays that coin's value times the global multiplier. Mini Bosses appear only in the base game.
Three Bonus scatter symbols trigger the Mass Attack Bonus. The grid shifts from the standard 5x6 rectangle to a circular layout: 10 radii by 5 concentric rings, with the hero stationed at the center. Enemies move inward from the outer ring. The hero's ammo and spread shot carry over from base; life is fully restored to 3. The bonus ends when the hero runs out of lives or when the Final Boss mode triggers.
The Final Boss spawns after 50 total enemy defeats across base and bonus games combined. The grid returns to the standard 5x6, populated only with enemies, coins, and multipliers. A 3x3 boss with 50 life and a Trophy Coin dominates the board. Unlike standard enemies, the Final Boss does not die after attacking the hero - it's a sustained combat encounter requiring consistent damage to defeat. The Trophy Coin payout on boss defeat is multiplied by whatever global multiplier the player has accumulated.
Hit frequency: 30.3%, the highest in ELK's recent cluster and battle releases. That makes Mine Defender the most consistently active of its lineup - medium volatility rather than the high volatility typical of ELK games. Max win: 10,000x. RTP: 94%, single tier, same across all X-iter buy modes. X-iter options go from 3x (bonus hunt) up to 500x for guaranteed bonus entry with maximum ammo.
