The Greatest Catch Slot Overview

An old fisherman dozes in a rowboat while the reels turn underwater beneath him. Fish drift onto the grid with cash values printed on little blue ribbons, and Wilds swim in to collect them. That is the game.

Wilds never appear in the base game. Not once. Ten fixed paylines grind away at 96.09% RTP with nothing to break them up, and everything this slot is built around sits behind three Scatters.

The ceiling is 10,000x, and it works as a hard stop rather than a dream figure. Reach it mid-bonus and the round ends right there, whatever spins were left.

Theme & Design

The view splits at the waterline. Above it, reeds and white lilies frame a calm pond, an old man in a yellow bucket hat leans back in a wooden boat with his rod out, and farmland rolls away in the distance. Below, the water goes deep teal, kelp sways at both edges, and the grey roots of a drowned tree claw down the right side. Glowing green boulders line the bottom.

The symbols are things you would pull out of a pond rather than treasure: a mud-blackened orange boot with a hook through the laces, a straw-yellow hat, a green frog mid-kick, a purple backpack with a thermos poking out of the zip. Royals sit inside soap bubbles, which is a neater solution than most fishing slots bother with. Fish carry their value on a ribbon slung underneath them.

One gripe. There is no reel frame at all, so the symbols float loose in dark open water, and on a busy grid it reads as soup until a payline lights up in blue lightning.

Features & How They Work

Free Spins

Three Scatters award 10 free spins, four give 15, five give 20. Scatters land in the base game only, so the round cannot be retriggered the usual way. Extra spins come from Wilds instead.

The Fishing collect

Wilds are the collectors. When at least one Wild and at least one Fish land on the same free spin, every Wild sweeps up every Fish value on the reels. Fish carry 2x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x or 2,000x the bet, and the collected total is added on top of whatever the paylines paid that spin.

Wild count and the multiplier ladder

Every fourth Wild to land awards another 10 free spins, played after the current batch runs out, and each new batch multiplies the Fishing collect. The first four Wilds unlock x2, the next four x3, the third four x10, and that third batch is the last one the game gives. So 12 Wilds is both the ceiling and the whole point of the mechanic, and reaching x10 with several fat Fish on the reels is the only route to 10,000x that makes any sense.

Dynamite

A Wild with no Fish next to it would be dead weight, so the game patches that. After any losing spin where a Wild is on the reels and no Fish are, between 3 and 6 regular symbols blow up and turn into Fish. It keeps the collect breathing through the flat stretches of the bonus.

No buy option here

This is the plain edition, so free spins have to be earned. Evoplay sells the shortcut as a separate release: in The Greatest Catch Bonus Buy, 10, 15 or 20 spins cost 50x, 92x and 140x the bet. Same round, same 10,000x cap, different door in.

How The Greatest Catch Plays

Base spins move fast and quietly. Ten lines on a 5x3 grid with a hit rate near 18% means something lands often enough to keep the balance drifting sideways, helped along by the boot paying from just two symbols, and none of it is worth much. Watching for Scatters is the entire base game. Sessions can run a long way without one.

Then the bonus starts and the rhythm flips. You stop reading paylines and start counting Wilds, because the count is what actually decides the round: four, eight, twelve. Every Wild that drops nudges the tally, and the tension sits in whether Fish happen to be sharing the reels at that moment rather than in the spin result itself.

The x2 and x3 batches are honestly filler. They pay a little and pass the time. It is the x10 stretch that people load this for, and most bonuses never get near it, which is what medium-high volatility means here in practice: the gap between an ordinary free spins round and a good one is enormous.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Holding every Wild back for free spins makes each one land with weight
  • Dynamite means a Wild almost never goes to waste
  • Fish values reach 2,000x, and the x10 tier can collect several at once
  • The boot pays from two on a line, so the base game is not completely silent

Cons

  • No wild, no feature and nothing to do in the base game except wait for Scatters
  • One bonus round is the entire game
  • The x2 and x3 tiers barely move anything, and the x10 batch needs 12 Wilds
  • No bonus buy in this edition

Is The Greatest Catch Worth Playing?

6/10

The idea underneath this one is sharper than the fish-collector genre usually manages. Keeping Wilds out of the base game entirely turns a symbol most slots scatter around into the scoring unit, and tying extra spins to a running Wild count gives the bonus a shape you can follow, since you always know how far off the next tier is. Dynamite closes the obvious hole in that design. For a 2022 release it still plays clean and quick.

What it lacks is a second act. Everything rides on one round, and if the Scatters stay away the game has nothing else to show. The seasonal reskin The Easter Catch runs the same engine with painted eggs instead of perch, which tells you how much of the value sits in the mechanic rather than the dressing. The bonus is worth waiting for. Not much else here is.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum win in The Greatest Catch?

10,000x the bet, which comes to 750,000 at the 75 maximum stake. It also works as a cap: if a free spins round reaches 10,000x, the round ends immediately and any remaining spins are forfeited.

How do you trigger the free spins?

Land 3, 4 or 5 Scatters anywhere in the base game for 10, 15 or 20 free spins. After that, every fourth Wild adds another batch of 10 spins, up to 30 extra.

How much can a Fish symbol be worth?

Each Fish carries a random value of 2x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x or 2,000x the bet. That value only pays when a Wild collects it during free spins, multiplied by whichever tier the round has reached.

What is the RTP and volatility?

96.09% RTP with medium-high volatility and a hit rate around 18%. Wins arrive fairly often in the base game but stay small until free spins.

Can you play The Greatest Catch for free, and what is the age limit?

The demo runs on play money, with no registration or deposit needed. Real-money play is restricted to players aged 18 or over, higher where local law says so, so set a budget before you start and treat it as entertainment.
