Traces Of Evidence Slot Review

A homicide scene after dark, and the reels are the evidence. Genii built Traces Of Evidence as a straight CSI procedural: police tape stretched over the top of the grid, cruiser lights bouncing off wet asphalt, bullets and a bloodied pistol and a toe-tagged body under a sheet sitting on the reels. Nothing cartoonish anywhere in it.

Underneath the mood it's a plain 5x3 game on 40 lines. The odd part is the symbol set. Three separate scatters share the reels: one pays on its own, one hands out free spins, and one drags the player off the reels and into the morgue for the Autopsy round. That last one is the reason to load it.

The background is a single unbroken street shot. A hooded figure stands in silhouette at the lower left with a pistol at his side, red and blue light smearing across the puddles from the cruiser parked behind him, a second set of tail lights glowing away in the rear. Over the top runs a yellow POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS banner carrying the title in blunt black capitals. The crime scene art is photographic rather than illustrated, and that is what sells it.

The best touch is the card ranks. Instead of carved letters they are petri dishes, glass lids and all, each letter grown inside in a smear of coloured culture, pink for one, green for another. The FACE MATCH symbol is a database terminal holding a clean input photo against a battered, bloodied mugshot, stuck forever at 10% analysed. And when a line connects, the rest of the grid drains to black and white while the winning symbols keep their colour and a DNA trace scrolls underneath them. Cheap trick. Works every time.

The rhythm is old-school 40-line. Something lands often, and most of what lands is worth less than the spin that produced it. A three-of-a-kind at 4 or 10 coins on a two-coin line barely moves the balance. So the drift downward happens in small increments instead of long dry cliffs, which is easier on the nerves and slower to resolve into anything.

The tension is unevenly distributed. Free spins arrive and pass without changing the temperature much. The morgue is the opposite: slow, deliberate, one reveal at a time, with a fair chance of turning up nothing at a spot the player chose. It is the only stretch of the game where anyone leans forward. Everything around it is time spent waiting for a trigger, and for my money that wait runs longer than the payoff justifies.

Genii spent the budget on atmosphere and it holds up. This is one of the few games in the studio's catalogue that treats an adult like one, and the morgue examination is a proper idea rather than a generic pick round with a crime skin on it. Letting it fire during free spins was the right call too.

The maths behind it does not keep pace. There is no published ceiling to chase and nothing above the 3,000-coin five-of-a-kind, which on a two-coin line is a good hit and not much more than that. Anyone loading this is loading it for the mood and the morgue, not for what the reels do in between (which, on a 5x3 line game built in 2018, is not much).
