Yokai Slot Review

Yokai is a Japanese-folklore slot that BGaming handed to a real street artist to draw, and the result looks like nothing else on the studio's shelf. It's the first title in the ART Collab series, illustrated by Lisbon-born Goncalo Mar in a loose ink-and-brush style. Grinning oni, a horse-headed demon, painted noh masks. The spirits here have real personality instead of the usual assembly-line polish.

Underneath the artwork sits a fairly standard machine: five reels, three rows, 20 fixed paylines, straight left-to-right line pays. The hook is a Moon Multiplier that climbs as special wilds land, and it does most of its work once the free spins begin.

The reels hang inside a weathered red torii gate, set against a snow-capped Mount Fuji, green hills and a pale summer sky. A kitsune-masked samurai stands to the right in a black haori and orange-striped hakama, two katana at his belt, cradling a glowing blue orb. Little round spirits with red neckerchiefs hop along the frame and the grass below, which is a nice touch.

The symbols carry the show. The high-pays are hand-drawn yokai: a long-faced tengu in a blue floral robe, a red horse-headed demon in armour, a white-faced noh dancer with a fan, and a fox-masked warrior crowned in gold. The royals get the same rough brush treatment, orange strokes with frayed, stapled edges rather than the clean digits most slots reuse. It's a coherent, hand-made look, and the roughness is the point.

Base-game Yokai is a slow burn. Line wins land often enough to keep the balance ticking, but they stay small, and a lot of spins amount to watching the odd valued wild nudge the moon up a notch before it fizzles. The tension is not in any single spin. It's in whether you can string three scatters together before the session runs cold.

The bonus flips the mood. With wilds locking in place and the moon refusing to reset, a middling round can compound into something worth the wait. That gap between a dead base game and a lively bonus is what medium-high volatility feels like in practice, and it is why many players will reach for the buy button rather than grind the ante.

Yokai is a solid 20-line slot lifted well above the ordinary by how it looks. The ART Collab idea works. Goncalo Mar's yokai have a hand-made charm that a hundred templated Asian-theme slots never manage, and the fixed 97% RTP and 8,000x ceiling back it up. The Moon Multiplier and sticky-wild bonus give the free spins a proper sense of building toward something.

The honest catch is that the machinery beneath the art is well-trodden. Valued wilds feeding a growing multiplier, wilds turning sticky in the bonus, you have met this shape before, just not painted this well. Take Yokai as a beautiful, well-built standard slot with an unusually good coat of paint and it delivers. Expect the art to carry more of the experience than the maths does.
