Peter & Sons hang a chain of cannonballs under a 5x3 pirate grid and double the multiplier on every winning cascade, with no top step. In the base game one dead drop wipes it back to x1. In free spins it never resets at all, and that single difference is the whole 30,000x game.

Barbarossa Revenge Slot Overview
A pirate slot with the cheer stripped out of it. Barbarossa Revenge sets its 5x3 grid in a graveyard of wrecked galleons, and its whole personality sits in a chain of cannonballs strung under the reels: every winning cascade doubles the multiplier on your total win, and the chain has no top step.
The symbols pay almost nothing on purpose. Five Barbarossas across 243 ways gives you 1x your bet back. Five cannonballs, 0.25x. Wins here are fuel for the chain rather than prizes in themselves, and the fuel only compounds while cascades keep landing.
This is the second full Barbarossa game from Peter & Sons on Yggdrasil's DoubleMax licence, and it lifted the ceiling from 20,000x to 30,000x. Whether it does much else new is the argument.
Theme & Design
Dusk over a drowned fleet. Half-sunken galleons and snapped masts stand black against a bruised orange and violet sky, smoke drifts across flat dark water, and the reels hang inside a frame nailed together from salvaged ship timbers with a torn banner strung above it. A rusted cannon lies at bottom left, chained to the row of ember-orange cannonballs marked x1, x2, x4, x8 that runs the width of the screen.
The five high symbols are painted portraits with a lot of character in them: a purple-skinned undead crewman in leather straps, a white-bearded old sailor in an open waistcoat with a tattooed chest, a woman under an enormous purple brim, a green-hooded warrior with blades crossed at her back, and Barbarossa himself in a red coat and black tricorne. Lows are naval instruments laid on painted wood and aged charts - sextant, flintlock with spilled coins, spyglass, magnifying glass, a stack of cannonballs. The Wild is the best piece of art in the game, a green kraken carved into a W, and the Scatter is a gold skull with lit eyes set in dark rock.
One gripe: the low symbols are muddy and too alike. Spyglass on a chart and magnifying glass on a chart read as the same thing at speed, which matters in a game built on watching cascades resolve.

Features & How They Work
Wild Cascades
Every win clears itself away. The paying symbols are removed, a Wild drops into one of the spaces they left, and fresh symbols fall to fill the rest. If the new grid pays, it all happens again. That leftover Wild is why chains run long here - each cascade hands the next one a little more help, so the odds of continuing creep upward the further you get.
The DoubleMax cannonball chain
The chain under the reels runs x1, x2, x4, x8, x16 and onward with no final step, and the cannon fires along it each time you advance. Every winning cascade doubles the multiplier applied to the round's total win. Base game and bonus differ by exactly one rule, and the game hangs on it: in the base game the chain snaps back to x1 the moment a spin or a cascade fails to pay, while in free spins it never resets and carries from the first spin to the last.
Golden Multiplier
Certain positions on the chain are larger, brighter cannonballs. Reach one and the next cascade is a guaranteed win, so the chain extends for free and the multiplier doubles again on the house. Small rule, huge effect: a golden step at x256 turns a 100 win into 25,600, and hitting one mid-bonus is usually where a round stops being ordinary.
Multiplier Jump
A random jump advances the chain one position with no win needed at all, and it fires up to three times in a row. Cracked, glowing cannonballs mark it. In the base game it is a nice bit of noise; in free spins, where nothing gets taken back, three jumps in a row is an eightfold gift.
Free Spins
Three golden skulls anywhere award 7 free spins, and each extra skull adds 2 more, so five Scatters gets you 11. They play at the triggering bet. No Scatters land inside the round, so there is no retrigger and the endpoint is known from the start, and the paytable does not improve either. Every scrap of extra value comes from the chain surviving the whole feature. One more rule worth knowing: a round is capped at 30,000x bet, and once that hits, any spins still owed are forfeited.
Golden Bet and the two buys
Golden Bet adds 0.5x to the stake for 1.5x total and doubles the chance of hitting the bonus, with RTP untouched. The buy options come at two prices: 100x bet for a flat 7 free spins, or 200x for a random 7 to 11. Everything runs at the same 96.4%, so the choice shapes your variance rather than your edge. There is no boosted third option in this one, if you came from the newer Dragon Empire expecting it.

How Barbarossa Revenge Plays
The base game is a waiting room. Around one spin in four pays something, most of those chains die at x1 or x2, and with symbol values this small a two-cascade win at x2 barely dents the stake. What you are really doing out there is hunting skulls.
Which makes the losing cascade the tense moment rather than the winning one. A chain sitting at x16 with the grid half full of Wilds is uncomfortable to watch, because one blank drop wipes it, and in the base game it will.
Free spins invert that feeling entirely. Seven spins sounds thin, and the first two or three usually are, but nothing you build gets taken back, so a round that looks dead at spin four can still be climbing at spin seven. The cold rounds end fast and cost you the whole trigger. Pacing your bankroll matters more here than in most cascade games, and anyone who dislikes long flat stretches will probably find this draining rather than exciting.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Multiplier chain has no ceiling and never resets during free spins
- Golden steps hand you a free cascade exactly when it hurts most to lose one
- Two buy prices plus an ante, all at the same 96.4% RTP
- Grim ship-graveyard art instead of another cheerful treasure hunt
Cons
- Base game is thin: short chains, tiny symbol pays, long dry stretches
- No retrigger, so a cold 7 spins is simply over
- Little is new beyond the Golden Multiplier and the higher cap
- Low symbols are hard to tell apart while cascades resolve
Is Barbarossa Revenge Worth Playing?
DoubleMax is one of the better multiplier engines out there and this is a lean, mean version of it. Doubling with no cap, golden steps that buy an extra link, jumps that move the chain for nothing - together they give the bonus more shape than most cascade features manage, and when a run gets going it escalates fast enough to be worth the wait.
The common complaint is fair, though. Take away the Golden Multiplier and the darker art and this is the original with a bigger number on the box. Anyone who played that will recognise almost every beat (the kind of sequel you enjoy while noticing you have seen it). The 30,000x is a headline figure at roughly 1 in 40 million, so the sane target is a bonus that drags the chain past x64 and keeps it there.
Load it for the bonus. The base game is the toll you pay to get there.
