Boxes strips away reels, paylines, and bonus rounds. What remains is a grid of hidden objects and one question: keep going or cash out? Each round starts with two choices - how many rows (4 to 8) and what difficulty (Easy, Medium, or Hard). Both directly shape the payout table and the odds of hitting a bomb on every pick.
The grid is 9 boxes wide. Row by row, you tap one box. Diamonds mean progress and a higher multiplier. Bombs end the round and take your bet. After any successful pick, a Collect button appears - take the current multiplier or push deeper toward the final row.
Mine distribution follows an inverse pattern that creates genuine tension. On Hard difficulty, the first row packs 6 bombs into 9 boxes - a 33% survival rate per pick. By row 8, only 1 bomb remains among 9 boxes, giving you an 89% chance. The early rows are the gauntlet. Survive them, and the odds tilt in your favor.
The gap between the safest and riskiest configuration is massive. Easy mode with 4 rows caps at 6.53x your bet. Hard mode with 8 rows reaches 548.80x - about 84 times higher. That spread reflects the compounding probability of surviving each additional pick on a more mine-dense board.
Medium difficulty on 8 rows hits 154.35x at the top, landing between Easy's casual multipliers and Hard's aggressive ceiling. A €2 bet on Hard 8-row tops out at around €1,098 - decent for an instant game, modest compared to slots where five-figure multipliers are standard.
RTP sits at 98.00% in the highest operator configuration. Lower tiers drop to 96.00% and 94.00%, and many casinos deploy the middle version. The 98% figure is above the average for both traditional slots and most competing instant-win games.
Hacksaw Gaming launched Boxes alongside Mines and Coins in early 2022 as their first batch of instant-win games under the Dare2Win brand. The series has since expanded to 14 titles including Plinko, Hi-Lo, Dice, Limbo, and Speed Crash. Mines became the breakout hit - its Minesweeper-style grid, 10,000x ceiling, and flat-field format made it immediately recognizable.
Boxes takes a different structural approach. Instead of clearing a flat field, you climb a pyramid. Each row is a separate survival check, and the multiplier progression is fixed and visible before you start. You know what row 5 pays and what row 6 pays before tapping a single box, so the collect-or-continue decision becomes purely mathematical. Mines reveals multipliers dynamically as you clear cells, creating a different kind of suspense.
The 549x max win is the obvious ceiling constraint. Spribe's Mines and BGaming's Minesweeper XY both offer higher potential, and even within Hacksaw's own catalog, Mines, Dice, Limbo, and Speed Crash all reach 10,000x. Boxes fills a specific niche - players who want transparent odds, short sessions, and full control over their risk profile without chasing massive multipliers.
