Then the low symbols turn up and it's playing cards again, a green club and a purple spade and a red heart and a blue diamond, each mounted in gold. Nicely made playing cards, still playing cards.

Grinding is the word for it. The top symbol returns 50x for five of a kind and the next tier stops at 10x, so a base spin that catches two or three lines hands back a slice of the stake rather than a win worth watching. The balance moves in small steps. Nothing feels dangerous, and nothing feels much like a thrill either, until Scatters start showing up on the reels.
