Joker Ra: Sunrise Slot Review

An ancient-Egypt slot where the pharaoh grins back like a card sharp, and where most of the money sits in glowing sun coins instead of the paylines. Endorphina built this as the follow-up to the original Joker Ra, and the changes are structural. The first game ran 100 lines and no free spins. This one cuts to 25 fixed lines on a 5x4 grid and adds two bonus rounds that have nothing in common with each other.

The one that carries the game is the Sunrise Bonus Game, a hold-and-win round tied to four fixed jackpot plaques stacked down the left of the reels: MIN, MID, MAX and ULTRA. ULTRA at 5,000x total bet is both the top plaque and the game's ceiling. The scatter-triggered free games are the lighter round, and they exist mostly to keep the base game from going completely flat.

Golden hour over the desert, and Endorphina commits to it. Pyramids sit hazy and enormous behind the reels, palm fronds hang into the frame at both edges, and the board is held in a thin gold rail with blue-striped dividers between reels. Later in a session the backdrop shifts to a temple avenue in deeper orange, columns and palms flanking the grid, which is a nice touch for a studio that usually leaves one static background running.

Symbol art is the glossy, faintly synthetic style a lot of 2024 releases picked up. Up close it looks airbrushed. At spin speed it reads fine: a turquoise-and-gold scarab, a winged ankh on deep blue, Anubis rendered against magenta, a bronze temple cat, a red-tailed falcon, and a jewelled frog wearing what looks like ceremonial armour. The Eye of Ra sits in a hieroglyph-carved tile. The Tutankhamun mask earns its place, though, because under the striped nemes headdress it wears a wide joker's grin, and that grin is the whole reason the word Joker is in an Egyptian game's title. Bonus coins are blazing suns with their cash value printed across the middle in blue. The soundtrack is standard strings and hand percussion, pleasant, gone from memory by the tenth spin.

Sessions split cleanly in two. Base-game spins are frogs, scorpions and cats trickling small line hits across four rows while you wait, and the wait runs long, because neither bonus builds toward anything. No meter fills. No pity trigger. Six coins either land together or they do not.

What keeps attention alive is coin counting. Sun coins carry visible cash values in the base game, so three or four of them scattered around is a near miss you can read off the reels, and five is the one that stings. (Every hold-and-win game does this; printing the money on the coin just makes it personal.)

Inside the bonus the pace tightens into something you can actually count. Three attempts, one new coin resets them, and the board creeps toward full. Most rounds stall out after a handful of suns, and whether it felt worthwhile usually comes down to a single question: did an eclipse coin turn up. The free games run the other way, quick and low-drama, and probably the round most players will see finish. Eight spins is not long.

Endorphina did more than repaint the first Joker Ra here. The line count dropped to a quarter of what it was, a hold-and-win round arrived, and four jackpot plaques now run down the side of the reels. The Sunrise round is put together properly: the reset-to-three attempt counter keeps tension honest, and the guaranteed jackpot inside every eclipse coin gives the bonus a floor that plenty of coin-collection games lack.

The ceiling is another matter. Reaching 5,000x means filling a perfect 20-cell board, and short of that the realistic bonus outcome is a few sun values plus one fixed tier. Nothing shortens the road there either, so the base game has to be endured at its own pace. Egyptian slots with jackpot plaques are hardly scarce, and the art, competent as it is, has that airbrushed 2024 look. As a hold-and-win it works. As an Egyptian theme it is one of several hundred.
