Octo Attack puts a cartoon octopus named Otto on a 6x5 cluster grid. The cluster pay system requires five or more matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically to form a win. After each cluster win, those symbols get removed through Inky Cascades - Hacksaw's name for tumbling/cascading wins. Removed positions get marked with Ink Stains, and new symbols drop in from above.
The stains matter because of Tenta-Grab. When Otto's Eye lands on the grid alongside existing Ink Stains, he grabs a random symbol and replaces every stained position (plus himself) with copies of that grabbed symbol. If Otto grabs a high-pay, the entire stained area fills with that symbol. If he grabs a wild or wild multiplier, those stained positions all become wilds with varying multiplier values from 1x to 10x.
The cluster size payout table runs from 5 symbols up to 26+. A 5-symbol cluster of LOW symbols pays just 0.1x. But grow that cluster to 26+ and the same LOW symbol pays 100x. For HIGH_5, the top regular symbol, a 26+ cluster pays 500x. Wild clusters of 30+ pay 1,000x. The progression is steep, which is why the Tenta-Grab mechanic matters so much - it's the primary way to force large clusters.
Three FS scatters trigger Eighth Arm Is the Charm. The crucial difference from base game: Ink Stains persist between spins instead of resetting. Stains accumulate across cascades and across spins, so by the time Otto's Eye lands, the stained area covers a significant chunk of the 30-position grid. Every 3 additional FS symbols add 1 extra spin.
Three FS_2 scatters (the epic variant) trigger Give Me Eight. Same persistent stains, but with a restriction that changes everything: Otto only grabs wild symbols, wild multipliers, or FS symbols. No regular pays, no lows. Every Tenta-Grab in this mode fills the stained area with wilds carrying multiplier values. That's the path to 10,000x.
The art direction stands out. A black-and-white comic book alley with selective color on key elements - pink popsicles, green zombie faces, red-yellow graffiti logo. Otto himself is bright blue against the grayscale backdrop. Low symbols are urban trash items (graffiti heart, music note, lightning bolt, skull, chain) in muted tones. High symbols get the color treatment.
At medium volatility (3/5 on Hacksaw's scale), this plays more evenly than most of their catalog. Clusters hit regularly, cascades chain reasonably often, and the Tenta-Grab fires frequently enough in the base game to keep sessions active. The trade-off is a more modest payoff curve compared to Hacksaw's 5/5 volatility titles - you're less likely to see the extreme ends of that 10,000x range.
