Two mermaid queens, a coral reef, and one structural quirk Genii almost never uses: every one of the 40 paylines here pays from either end. Win Both Ways is common enough elsewhere in the industry, but this studio's catalogue is overwhelmingly left-to-right, so finding it here is the first thing worth flagging.

What it doesn't do is double the money. Only the higher of the two directional wins counts on any given line, so the rule buys frequency rather than size. On a game whose best symbol pays 250 coins for five, that's the right trade.

One thing to be upfront about. No RTP figure has ever been published for Sea Queens, no volatility rating, no release date, and no review site carries the game at all: every outlet that covers the rest of the Genii catalogue turns up nothing for this title. Everything here comes from the game itself.

The reel frame is heavy gold rococo scrollwork, and it sits over a painted underwater reef that fills the whole background: stacked rock columns down the left, coral in salmon, mustard, violet and teal along both edges, sunlight breaking up through the water at the top. The two queens are the best-drawn things in it. The blonde one is set inside a gold diamond frame, the redhead inside a hexagon, both finished in that slightly airbrushed fantasy-portrait style. Under them sit a pair of green seahorses curled face to face and a flat magenta starfish.

The royals are carved glass letters, A in yellow, K in copper, Q in pale cyan, J in violet, and they read cleanly at a glance, which matters more than it sounds on a grid that's mostly royals. The weak spot is the reel area itself. It's a flat dark-teal panel with the reef blurred out behind it, so all that painted detail lives in the margins where nothing happens. When a line pays, every symbol outside the win turns to grey stone, which is a small thing done well and makes a backwards win easy to follow.

Sessions are made of small change. The bet ladder runs from $0.40 up to $50.00 (four chip sizes, one to five coins per line, the 40 lines never move), and at the $4.00 default a three-of-a-kind Q is worth 60 cents. Because lines resolve from both ends, you'll notice the balance ticking over more often than in a one-way slot, and mostly sideways. It's busy without being generous.

The lift, when it comes, is the shell, and yes, it's doing basically all the work in this game. A stacked Wild through the middle with something decent on either end is the base game's whole ceiling, and the doubling makes those spins land with a bit of weight. Then the bonus arrives and it's four spins. The expanding wilds are excellent for about twelve seconds. That's the frustrating part of the design, and it's hard to look past: the best thing in the game is also the shortest thing in it.

The headline reads 53,870 coins, the biggest coin ceiling in the whole Genii run, and it works out to 1,347x the bet because 40 paylines divide it down. Respectable, not enormous, and the gap between those two numbers is entirely an artefact of the line count. It also can't land on one line. With a 250-coin top symbol the ceiling has to assume a grid paying many lines at once, in both directions, with doubled wilds riding along. Not one big hit. Lots of them together.

What's left is a well-made, slightly old-fashioned line slot with one idea executed properly. Both-ways scoring suits a flat paytable, and a wild that changes shape between base game and bonus is smarter design than most middle-reel wilds get. Genii has other reef-set games, Reef Encounter among them, but the both-ways structure is close to unique for the studio. The four-spin bonus is what keeps this from being a small favourite. Eight spins at five Scatters isn't much better.
