An Aztec temple at sunset, a pile of tropical fruit, and a sun mask that swallows every gem on the board. Sunstone Riches is Evoplay's hold-and-collect game squeezed onto three reels, and the squeeze is the interesting part.

The grid is lopsided on purpose. Reels 1 and 3 are three symbols tall, the middle reel is five, and that 3-5-3 shape is what produces the 45 ways to win. It also splits the game into jobs: the outer reels carry the red gems that hold cash values, the tall centre reel carries the Sun that collects them. You can read the whole trigger at a glance, which is rare in a modern hold and win title.

Regular pays are small. The Aztec woman, top of the chart, gives 15x bet for three. Everything meaningful comes out of the Bonus Game, where the ceiling sits at 8,292x, a shade above the 8,200x the game advertises for itself.

The backdrop is a stepped pyramid in warm sunset orange, softened by haze, with dense jungle green creeping across the bottom of the frame. Each of the three reels sits in its own carved stone panel with fretwork borders, and a small golden temple with lit braziers perches on top of the right-hand reel like a finial. The premium symbols are the strongest art here: a masked woman in a gold headdress with violet face paint, a pair of inlaid gold drinking cups, and a turquoise feathered serpent with a red crest.

The fruit ruins it a bit. Pineapple, dragon fruit, papaya, mango, tomato and avocado are rendered like supermarket photography, glossy and modern, sitting right next to hand-carved stone. Evoplay clearly wanted the classic fruit-machine read, and it works mechanically, but the two art styles never meet. The four jackpot plaques stacked down the left in red, blue, green and purple are clean and readable, and the sound stays low and percussive until a gem lands.

Base spins are quiet. Three matching fruits pay back a fraction of the stake, the counter ticks down, and for stretches nothing on the board matters except whether a red gem shows up on an outer reel. When one does, the game gets legible in a way most slots aren't: you need exactly three things, you can see all three reels at once, and you know instantly whether the spin is alive. Two gems and no Sun is the most common way to be disappointed here, and you'll see it a lot.

The Bonus Game is short and it moves. Three spins is barely any runway, so the whole round hangs on whether the resets keep firing, and a round that stalls at two Suns and a handful of 2x gems is over in about fifteen seconds with 40x on the counter. That is the honest median outcome. The good ones build visibly, one Sun at a time, and because each new Sun re-pays the entire pot you can feel the total jump rather than creep.

What's missing is any middle gear. There are no free spins, no multiplier ladder, nothing between the fruit trickle and the bonus, so sessions run as long flat stretches punctuated by one event (and yes, plenty of hold-and-win games have this problem). Sun Gifts softens it. It doesn't fix it.

Evoplay took a mechanic that normally needs a 5x3 or bigger board and made it work on three reels by making one of them taller. That's a smart bit of design, and the collect maths that follow from it are the best thing here: a pot that gets paid once per Sun climbs fast when it climbs at all. The Aztec dressing is handsome, if let down by fruit symbols borrowed from a different genre.

The limitation is how little happens outside the bonus round. High volatility on a game with one feature and no free spins means the balance graph is a staircase down with occasional cliffs upward, and at 96.06% you're not being compensated with anything unusual. The 8,292x ceiling is honest enough as a number but needs the tall reel packed with Suns while a GRAND gem sits on an outer reel, which is about as rare as it sounds. For a quick, clear, low-clutter collect game it does the job. Anyone who wants variety inside a session will find it thin.
