Nitropolis launched in November 2020 and kicked off what became ELK Studios' biggest franchise. The 6x4 grid starts at 4,096 ways to win, but that number is just the floor. Nitro Reels - oversized symbols covering two positions with up to 12 identical symbols inside - can push the active ways to over 85 million. That's not a theoretical number you never see. It builds naturally through the respin chain.
The setting is a dystopian city run by four animal gangs: Dirty Dawgs, Gritty Kitty, Pug Thugs, and Rogue Rats. It's all neon lights and urban grit, the kind of theme that's aged well through ten sequels and spin-offs.
Nitro Reels cover two vertical positions and hold 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 identical symbols. When any winning symbols land, they respin individually. So if a Nitro Reel contributes to a win, it respins and might upgrade. This chain keeps going as long as new wins appear.
There's also a Last Hurrah trigger - when no more wins exist, Nitro Reels in view get one random respin. It doesn't fire every time, but it saves otherwise dead rounds often enough to matter.
At 19.8% hit frequency, the base game doesn't pay often. And the paytable is back-loaded toward six-of-a-kind combinations, so even when you do hit, small clusters pay poorly. The game wants you in the bonus.
Three bonus symbols trigger 10 free spins (up to 25 with six scatters). Every Nitro Reel on screen when the bonus starts locks in place for the entire round. Between spins, locked Nitro Reels can randomly upgrade to hold more symbols, steadily inflating the way count.
During the bonus, one random paying symbol gets selected for scatter wins. Three or more of that symbol on three different reels pays based on the total count, not position. Retriggers select an additional scatter symbol, stacking up to three types. Combined with locked and growing Nitro Reels, late-stage bonus rounds generate wins from almost every spin.
A buy bonus option was added after launch: 100x bet for standard entry, 300x for a Super Bonus with a guaranteed retrigger and extra scatter symbol. The 96.1% RTP is higher than most modern ELK games, which now sit at a fixed 94%.
The 10,000x cap is modest compared to sequels that pushed to 50,000x. But the Nitro Reels engine - the mechanic that drove the entire franchise forward - plays cleanly here without the feature bloat that later entries added. Sometimes the original version of a good idea is the best one.
