Sun Princess runs on Hacksaw's 7x7 cluster pay engine, the same foundation that powered Cloud Princess and Rainbow Princess before it. The anime-styled character this time is Celeste, a sun goddess with a crown of golden light. Twelve symbols populate the grid - five gem-like highs, five smaller lows, a Wild, and a Free Spins scatter. Clusters of 5+ matching connected symbols pay, with 13 size tiers stretching all the way from 5-symbol minimums to 49+ symbol mega-clusters worth 10,000x for the top two symbols.
That paytable granularity is unusual. Most cluster pay games stop at 15 or 20 symbols. Here, every few symbols added pushes you into a new pay bracket - the jump from a 35-cluster (3,500 coins on HIGH_5) to a 49+ cluster (100,000 coins) is massive. Getting there is the hard part.
One Sun Ray Frame lands per spin, attaching itself to any low, high, or Wild symbol. After wins resolve, the frame activates and shoots beams outward - vertical, horizontal, or four-way depending on its type. Every symbol those beams touch transforms into the same type as the framed symbol.
Here's where it gets interesting. If a Sun Ray beam hits a symbol that already matches the frame's type, that symbol triggers its own Sun Ray spread. Chain reactions continue until the grid fills or the chain breaks. A four-way frame landing on a common symbol near the center of a 7x7 grid has real potential to cascade across dozens of positions.
Wilds touched by Sun Rays pick up a 2x multiplier. Hit the same Wild again and it jumps to 4x. Multiple Wild multipliers in a single cluster add together before applying to the win. Two Wilds at 4x and 2x in the same cluster means a 6x total on whatever that cluster pays.
Three FS scatters trigger Solaris Grove - 10 free spins with increased Sun Ray Frame frequency. Four scatters open Sunfire Palace, same 10 spins but Wilds hit by Sun Rays become sticky for the entire bonus and keep their multipliers growing. Five scatters unlock Golden Eclipse, the Hidden Epic mode. Every spin in Golden Eclipse guarantees at least one Sun Ray Frame, and sticky Wilds carry over with their accumulated multipliers.
Retriggers add spins: 2 scatters during any bonus give +2, 3 scatters give +4. The gap between Solaris Grove and Golden Eclipse is significant - guaranteed Sun Rays on every spin combined with persistent sticky Wild multipliers create compounding potential that the lower tiers lack.
Four FeatureSpins modes available. BonusHunt triples the bonus trigger rate (3x, lower than Hacksaw's typical 5x on other games). Stellar FeatureSpins guarantee one Sun Ray Frame per spin in the base game. Solaris Grove and Sunfire Palace are direct bonus buys. Pricing wasn't visible in the demo version.
Cloud Princess introduced the 7x7 anime cluster engine. Rainbow Princess added Magic Frames and cascading mechanics. Sun Princess swaps those for Sun Ray Frames with directional spreading and chain reactions. Each entry keeps the core grid and art direction but reworks the signature mechanic. The progression makes sense - Sun Rays feel more dynamic than the previous frame systems, though whether that translates to better hit potential depends entirely on frame placement luck.
One criticism: the 10,000x cap feels modest for a very-high volatility 7x7 game. Rainbow Princess had the same ceiling. For comparison, some Hacksaw titles with smaller grids push 15,000x or higher. The chain reaction mechanic is flashy, but the upside doesn't match the variance.
