Monster hunters are throwing a Halloween party in a wooden tavern, and the reels sit in the middle of it, somewhere between the eyeball cake and the balloons. The game runs on one idea. Mystery tiles drop in, then all of them flip to the same random symbol at once, so a spin that looked dead turns into a row of matching werewolves.

The grid sits inside a gold frame of thorny vines with bat-wing corners. Premiums are portraits, and they are good ones: a blue-furred werewolf in a jewelled collar, a grim white-bearded priest against a sickly green wash, and the long-haired hunter in tinted glasses who carries the gold W. Then the pay ladder gets lazy. Four gothic crosses in red, green, blue and yellow, identical apart from the colour, which is the cheapest way there is to fill the bottom of a paytable. The magenta spin button is the only thing in the frame that belongs to this century.

Long stretches of this game are quiet. Four low symbols paying the same tiny amount means most winning spins hand back a slice of the stake, and with 20 fixed lines there is no lever to change the rhythm. The eye stops reading paylines after a while and just counts mystery tiles.

That gives a session an odd shape. Nothing, nothing, nothing, then a burst that either resolves into a cross and deflates, or resolves into a portrait and pays properly. A reveal dressed as a decision, and it can wear thin over a long sitting in a way it never does over twenty spins.

Free spins feel like a different product. Something accumulates on screen instead of resetting every spin, so there is a reason to care about spin four rather than only spin one. The gap between how the base game feels and how the bonus feels is wider here than in most 5x3 slots, and that is both the appeal and the problem.

Unholy Mystery is a nicely drawn slot with one mechanic doing all the lifting. When a screen of mystery tiles flips into the werewolf it justifies the whole thing, and when it flips into a blue cross, which is most of the time, you are back to a 20-line grinder with good furniture. The 10,000x ceiling is not decoration, but it lives inside the free spins, behind sticky tiles and a 100x multiplier that has to find the right symbol to sit on.

Five games into their existence, Just Slots can clearly build one of these, and the tavern set has more personality than most gothic slots bother with. The maths is where it stays ordinary.
