Royals are fat letters with a fish-scale texture, green Q, red K, gold A, purple 10, pink 9. Above them sit a red and white motorboat bristling with rod holders, an open tackle box spilling lures, a rod with a brass reel, a dragonfly with iridescent wings, and a bobber float resting in its own ripple. Cash Prize symbols are fish lit up on green cards with the value printed on a banner underneath, and the Collect fisherman is a bearded man in a green cap holding up a golden bass, who stretches to fill his whole reel when he pays. The four pots stack on the left rail in red, blue, pink and yellow. Beside them, greyed out and crossed through with fishing rods, are the five upgrades you have not earned yet, which is a smart bit of design: the thing you want is visible from the first spin.

Early spins are the thinnest part of it. With the trail locked you have a ways-pay grid of royals, boats and tackle boxes plus the occasional two-prize collect, which is a fairly dull slot by 2025 standards. The game gets interesting on a curve, and the curve is slow. Anyone who gives it twenty spins and moves on has seen the worst version of it.

Once two or three upgrades are live the rhythm changes. Collects begin overlapping, the grid gets busier, and the pull shifts from whether this spin pays to how far up the ladder the session can climb before the balance runs out. That is an unusual thing for a fishing slot to be about, and it probably suits a long steady sit-down more than a quick look.

Medium volatility does what it says. Money comes back in small regular pieces, dry patches stay short, and nothing ever detonates. Wins arrive in a steady drip, which is either soothing or boring depending on the hour, so the satisfaction has to come from the meter filling rather than from any one spin.

Blueprint has built this machine many times over, and this is one of the tidier versions of it. The trail gives a session direction that most cash-collect slots lack, and the net quietly fixes the old annoyance of watching four fish land with no fisherman anywhere near the outside reels.
